Need Advice for my 2nd Build

I'm currently in the process of gathering a parts list for a build I'm doing for my friend. We're going for a medium-performance gaming rig. So far here's the list (along with prices and links to the parts on Newegg):

Case - Corsair Carbide 400r = $100 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139008&Tpk=400r
Disk Drive - Hp (Generic) = $25 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827140041
(EDITED) RAM - Ripjaw (2 x 4gb) = $46 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
(EDITED) Hard Drive - Samsung 1TB = $80 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185
(EDITED) Motherboard - ASRock Z77 Pro3 = $100 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157297&Tpk=asrock%20z77%20pro3
Processor - i5 2500K = $220 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
(EDITED) GPU - Msi R7770 = $130 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127664
PSU - Corsair 400w = $45 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026&cm_sp=Cat_Power_Supplies-_-Spotlight-_-17-139-026
Heat Sink - Zalman = $34 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118223&Tpk=cnps9500a

The total cost of the build is roughly $864 (CURRENTLY $783), but we'd like to get the price down while sacrificing only a small amount of performance. The purpose of this thread is to get advice on what to downgrade or change in order to bring down the price. The Case, Processor, PSU, and Heat Sink will definitely remain the same, but we're willing to change/downgrade any other parts.

Here are some specifics:

- How is 8gb vs. 12gb vs. 16gb of RAM? Is there a large difference in speed? If it is negligible then I'd purchase less than the current 16gb I'm planning on buying. EDIT: I will be downgrading to 8gb of RAM.

- No specific motherboard has been decided on, so advice on a good board between $90 and $110 is greatly appreciated. EDIT: I am currently going with the ASRock Z77 Pro3 (and I'd still like some suggestions).

- After doing a little looking around, it appears that a 500gb Hard Drive (which is, in reality, all that is needed for this build) is roughly $90 while an HD that holds 1tb is only $120. Is there a place to get a reasonably priced 500gb Hard Drive (below $70, to stay in line with the price of the tb)? If not I'll throw in the $30 for the terabyte.

- I chose the GPU after little searching and am still trying to find something better/cheaper. I'd need something in the $110-$150 range (but willing to go over for an exceptional card).

If you have any other advice on how to bring down the cost or parts to swap out it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't think games will really benefit from the 16GB RAM, get a set of 8GB, Vengeance/Ripjaws X. Don't buy any Intel manufactured board, the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 is a great board for the price, grab that. The 2500k (the one that can overclock) is available for only $10 more, get that instead of the 2500 and pair it with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus, leaves great room for overclocking. As for the GPU, get the HD 7770 from any manufacturer; a better performer than the 550Ti.

ASRock Z77 Pro3 is a good choice. Don't get Intel boards as above poster told you. And get the 2500k with a Hyper 212+ or a Hyper 412+. You'll get plenty of headroom for an OC.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll go with one of th ASRock boards and switch to the 2500k (although my friend is never going to OC). I'll also downgrade to 8gb of RAM.

I'd still like some more advice on the GPU though.

Thanks.

why get the 2500 for that when ncix has the 2500k for $199 and free shipping biggrin.gif

Also the Extreme3 gen3 is one of the best mobo's for the price although it is 120 :/

Get a 7770, would be better than the 550Ti both in terms of performance and power consumption.

Thanks for that link UpgradeSolution, but I won't be buying the parts before 6/20 (when their savings end), although I'm just going to put in the extra money and buy the 2500K regardless.

Also, how is this 7770 from Msi? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127664

Their link says it ends 6/20 but it has been on a constant sale at $199 since november, they restart the sale every time it ends so check it out when you buy. biggrin.gif

Okay, so I currently have a good case, motherboard, RAM, Heat Sink, PSU, and Processor. I need some confirmation on the new GPU I chose (here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127664) as well as some suggestions for another card in that price range. I also am wondering if there's anywhere to buy a 500gb HDD for under around $70. If so I'll downgrade to that size instead of the 1Tb.

Thanks.
