you have to have the vfat filesystem kernel drivers either loaded as a module or built into your kernel, in order to mount a fat16/32 filesystem.

then, you may have to explicitly SAY you want vfat.. by default the gui way is to use fs=auto

(IMPORTANT! if ALL of your hard drives are ata then your phone, when plugged in via usb, will be sda1 or sdb1 meaning scsi device either 1st or 2nd, usb uses generic scsi emulation or something like that)

(and make sure you make the mountpoint /mnt/phone by doing #mkdir /mnt/phone)

so try (as root)

#mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/phone

if you get an error saying that device does not exist, try sdb1 sdc1 sda2 sdb2 etc.. idk your configuration, dmesg tells you though, and you haven't posted it

and if you STILL can't mount it, you might not have vfat built into your kernel, or loaded... try #lsmod see what popps out...

if no message is displayed at all.,.. then check /mnt/phone and look at your contents!!! yay.
