Upgrading from Q6600! What to do? 3770K vs 3930K

Thread Starter
So one of my cousins was able to get the 3930K for $220 through the Intel retail thing. He's giving it to me as a gift(he's not a computer guy). Now I have two options. I can either keep it, get a mobo and call it a day, or I can sell it, with the money I should be able to get(if I sell my current mobo/ram/cpu/gpu) a 3770K+mobo+670.
So whats the best option?
  • Keep the 570 and get a 3930K, which I really want to do since it has 12 cores, and considering how long I kept my Q6600(since '08) it wouldn't go out of date as fast.
  • Sell it, use the money to upgrade to a 670, and get a 3770K instead

PS3 media server is also going to be running 24/7 if possible, I can't do it right now since it uses all of my ram, and then BF3 wont work. I also mainly play BF3/MP3 @1080p(might be getting a 1440p catleap soonish). Looking to max out at least at 1080p for while, with games like GTA V, Arma3, Dishonored, AC3, skyrim with tons of mods etc . Thanks!

I would say to sell it. Gpu power is so much more value than cpu power when it comes to gaming. (Also, the 3930k is only 6 cores, but 12 hyperthreaded) thumb.gif

personally I would get the 3770k and 670. You said you wanted the 12 core. Is there a reason you need that many cores. Theres not much that actually effectively uses twelve cores.

Either will perform better than your current. The 670 is a big improvement over your current gpu.

Keep that Core i7 3930k with urself if u r getting it for $220

and get Gigabyte G1 Assassin 2 - $350

regarding GPU..wait for Nvidia Maxwell to arrive next year.. thumb.gif

3930K and an older GPU will be worse gaming perf wise for now, but the X79 platform should last much longer than IB chips. If you want a similar experience as the Q6600, I would keep the 3930K. It's like buying the Q6600 over a core 2 duo back in the day, not really better performance in games at the moment but much more future proof.

Besides with a 3930K you will kill all 3770Ks in stuff that can use more than 8 threads. And with the 3930K you wouldn't have to go through the hassle of selling the proc.

But as I said, the 3770K + 670 option will provide better gaming performance right now.

I kind of wanted the cores just to have more cores. When I was getting my Q6600 everyone said the E8400 would be better all around, but it was well worth it in the long run to stick with the Quad. Do you guys foresee such a jump in the future? Also as I said I want to have PS3 media server running all the time, wouldn't that use some CPU power while gaming? But then again the 3770 does have 8 logical cores. What motherboard do you guys recommend for each of them? I want to OC to 5.0GHz if possible. For ram I will be getting the Samsung Low voltage in either case

The only reason I'd go with an x79 build would be for the pci lanes if I wanted it to last as long as possible. I know what you mean to want more threads just for the sake of having more. If definitely want a more balanced build then CPU heavy and lighter gpu. My last build was a then new 2600k and a used 6950, I was going to sell it and drop to a 2500k and a better gpu but I ended up with a much larger budget and found some good deals on the parts I have now. My other computer had SLI 460's, then new, and a 1090T under a 212+. And the 1090T ended up bottle necking my 460's in bf3. So my last 2 computers I built for myself kinda swung one way or another and now I finally feel I have a well balanced computer where I can push both my CPU and gpu.

I agree. And I might still be able to get a 670 if I can get $80 more dollars somehow(definitely by black Friday). But is it really worth the $200 more? 200 means I can get an H100 or something +SSD
