New Budget Gaming PC

Thread Starter
Hey guys, Havnt really posted for a while and im getting tired of the poor performance of my current machine, Its really laggy at current:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200@2.21ghz - am2 (940)
Asus M2N-E SLI - Nforce4 motherboard
2gb Team Elite-800 - PC6400
1gb OCZ - PC2 - 5300
ATI Radeon HD 4650 512mb
Thermaltake Toughpower 600w

Looking to either upgrade or replace, What do you think would be the best option?, I've no idea on the age of the old kit and im not sure it would be worth ebaying to fund extra cash for the new build (if i go down that route).

I have about £200 to spend and im looking to play dod:s/cs:s, cod4/5/BFBC2

As ive not really looked into hardware for a while im not sure what my "best bang for buck" items would be.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input
Ross

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103951

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138333

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150576

This combo is free of shipping, and also has the same amount of graphic horsepower as a 7750! So it's a tri-core (better than what you have now), in a M-ATX motherboard (with four memory slots), with a 6670, the best dual graphic card out there!

are you saying the 6670 will work like crossfire with iGPU?

i like what you suggested.

The listed GPU is 128 bit (good, not 64) but is DDR3 instead of DDR5. Check pricing.
Buy the GPU first to try in your existing rig?

Note: an INTEL G620/630 dual core will trade bench marks with the CPU portion of this CPU, and motherboards are available at $70.
An HD7750, or HD5750/5770 (HD6750/6770 are rebadged 5xxx series). Equivalent to crossfire or better.

The advantage of Llano is the low heat, overclockability, and crossfire with 6570 or 6670 GPUs.
The lesser joy is using motherboard memory for APU video, performance scales with memory speed, 1866 is worthwhile, higher is better.
Upgrade path is limited. Trinity socket FM2 desktop is "due" in September. Piledriver CPU architecture.

That said we need to know your usage and monitor resolution (now and intended)for a "best" answer. And whether this is intended to remain as is? And for the price Llano does well.

ITis also true I have not built or lived with either.

jacobwt226: If you're going to get a 6670 and it's not the GDDR5 kind, you might as well get the 6570 which is an underclocked 6670 DDR3 (overclock it).

With that in mind, I prefer this balance:

MSI Radeon 6570 - $55 shipped, $10 rebate

Biostar TA75M + AMD A8 3870k - $176 shipped

or

Biostar TA75M + AMD A8 3850 OEM - $145 shipped

Enermax ETS T-40 T.B. SILENCE - $30 shipped

Regardless though you'll want to pay attention to the fact that he is in the UK thus there is no Newegg recommendation in this thread that applies.

For that price you could get an 5770 or 5790 GFX card (perhaps even 6850 if its on sale) - that should make these games quite playable already. Depending on the price of the GFX card there might be a little to spare for either a bit extra RAM (while games use up to 3 Gb it helps to have a little extra)

If you decide to do a fresh build leaving your current system more or less intact I would go with something on the lines of
Cheapest AM3 board with UCC (760 series chipset probably)
Semptron 140 or 145 (unlock to 2 core with UCC)
Hyper 212+
4 Gb RAM
5770 GFX card (512 Mb is ok, depends on what you can afford)
Cheapest case and disk, ~400W PSU (put it in your current rig, use that 600W for this one)

480
This is Semptron 140, AMD 4870 gfx, my backup machine. Vista 64 bit. So the performance is not that bad. After that you can save up a little bit and get better CPU down the road. The semptron will bottleneck, but not bad enough to castrate the GFX card to unplayable levels. Even with Semptron the 4870 or 5770 would offer playable experience and visible upgrade from the current system.

You can buy a Asrock N68C-S UCC which also supports DDR2. Then you can buy a DDR2 4GB stick so you have 6 GB with your old stick. Then you can buy the best video card for the rest of your money (£150). Maybe you can buy a Geforce GTX 560 TI. I think this would be a decent update for your box.

Abandon the old and get new. Don't build your rig around old antiquated DDR2 thinking it will save money or something. Memory is dirt cheap right now - you can get 8GB of 1600Mhz for <$50- not sure what that is in pounds at the moment. Thatt is probably less than you can get 2 GB of old slow DDR2 for.

Why not? It's good for the nature, it's good for your budget and also don't make RAM companies rich and always buy there newest crap? The Asrock N68C-S is a clever board supporting both ram. Only drawback is the bad vrm, it has only 3+1 phases.

Selling or keeping for backup his existing computer and building a new one would be "better for the environment". You have two working computers rather than one working one, with new parts that had to be made, and some garbage.
