[Joystiq] South Korea bans botting in online RPGs

The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is announcing a new law next month that will make botting in online RPGs illegal. According to this governmental body's calculations, 60% of all in-game items traded for real currency were obtained by automated programs. The law will also ban the listing of items in arcade games as real property that can be exchanged for cash. The maximum penalty for breaking this law will be 5 million Won (approximately $4300) and 5 years in jail.

I haven't seen this posted yet but its interesting to say the least. I don't think it will have much if any effect since I assume most bots are in China and some in North Korea. It also doesn't ban farmers or the buying or selling of in-game currency illegally/against ToS. Completely shutting off all internet traffic from China within games seems like it might work if they can't bypass it but this law just seems to do absolutely nothing useful at all. Good that they are trying at least but definitely not going to do anything. thumb.gif

Edit: You know if they did this in the US and Can for hackers in SC2 I would be a very happy panda. Because even if its some stupid kid doing it there parents will be mad. XD

Okay and how will they know people are botting?
If it was that easy wouldn't company's like Blizzard have no botting problems in WoW?

You do realize that blizzard bans bots in massive waves right? Instead of just banning the account they can find you and charge you, assuming your account wasnt hacked or stolen.

Its just an arms race, except there has been no real punishment for people who bot except a small loss (which they probably earned way more from). Now people who want to bot wont because they know there bot will get found out and banned eventually an no one is gonna risk 4k for that, especially if the govt repossesses your PC to pay for it LOL.

You do realize that the good bots aren't detected by Blizzard? And 90% of the bans are due to player reports (Atleast in WoW)?
I botted for about 2 years in WoW because i was bored but didn't want to leave the game yet.... i never got banned.

EDIT:
Also besides that some bots have safety measures implemented (dunno how exactly it works but i think something like this) when Blizzard makes a change to warden the bot notices the change and shuts off its login server so people can't use the bot anymore untill the bot developers have made sure everything is safe for people to continue.

So what you are saying is that since warden cant detect bots but human players who's best interest it is to report bots and the main source of bot bans are even more motivated to report the bots who devalue their currency through cheating and slap them in the face with a fat $4,000 fine wont do it?

Hacks and "automated micro bots" in SC2 cause huge problems along with stream sniping that is hurting a budding business in a recession. I cant wait for more stuff to happen to ban people who bot or hack or cheat online.

Just another thread on why its good to NOT cheat in a game. It's not only not fun, but the repercussions of hacking could be worse than you think...thumb.gif

Yes the main source of bans is player reports and only when either the bot isn't good (making bot like moves, walking a few yards stopping then turning), the profile isn't well optimized(somebody getting stuck and keep walking for hours, also has to do with a bad bot without stuck detection) or somebody leaves his bot on for weeks on end without stopping it.

Usually the better made bots look just like a human is playing, the only difference where you can notice somebody is botting in WoW is when somebody is flying the exact same pattern for hours and hours. Meaning to succesfully identify a bot you would need to follow the bot for a while.

I'm curious as to how they will "track down" these botters.
