controller for windows gaming.

i don't pc game, at all.
i'd like to but i'm a total k/mouse tard.. i have tired and its like i'm using two hoofs to text message on a touch screen.. it just isn't going to happen.

so i'm looking into a controller like the xbox for the pc.
the question is what to get? i already have about 3 or 4 xbox controllers here at the house so it would be nice to be able to use those.

found this
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B004QRKWKQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1339951353&sr=1-1&keywords=Xbox+360+Wireless+controller+for+Windows
looks like i can use it with both the pc and with the xbox..

any recommendations from anyone that actually plays with a console style controller?
i tend to play games like fps and racing games.

My 360 controller was USB. A friend and I couldn't get the wireless ones to work with the PC. It was pretty awesome before my daughter ruined the cord. Mainly I just used it for BF3 jets and Batman, but almost all games I tried supported it natively.

will the wireless work if plugged in usb?
i see a lot of wired ones working and you don't need a special windows version but i'm not seeing the same reports for wireless

The wireless controller cable only supply power, not data.

You'll need one of these to get a wireless controller to work with a PC:
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Xbox-360/dp/B003WFYZCY

There's a million of them out there, not sure which works the best. But you get the idea...

i was looking at those but none of them see to be official MS ones
people in the reviews using w7 64bit say every time you unplug it or reboot you have to reinstall the drivers.
for less hassle or piece of mind, i think i'll just pick up a wired controller.

you guys know if the wired headset works on the pc also? if so that would be fantastic!
i have a usb headset but after about 1hr of game play my ears hurt with it. i'd rather not spend any more cash on a headset.

found this on another site with a little google digging
Quote:
You can, get the Xbox 360 software for Windows from Microsoft's web site. When you plug in your controller, it will show up as a game controller device (you can use it to control your PC games). If you then plug your 360 headset into your controller, another device will be found and installed, this time an audio controller. Now your headset will function as a normal audio device. You can play sound (music, system sounds, chat, etc) through the headset and use the headset microphone as a source for chat and recording programs. You can use it with Windows Live Messenger, probably AOL and Yahoo clients, or any other chat program that supports voice, just pick the Xbox 360 Headset as your speakers and microphone.

how fantastic is that for someone that already has an xbox 360!

too bad the wireless ones don't work like that. lol, every single one i have is wireless and yet they spend about 75% of their life plugged into the xbox. about the only time i go wireless is when i que up a video or some tv shows in netflix or hbo go when i go to bed.

I use the wired headset attached to my wired 360 controller. Works with mumble for me, haven't tried it with much else.

Well the problem with the Wireless Adapters is that they need a powered USB port to work properly. (I.E. a port on your MoBo or an expansion card, possibly even a powered hub) Not the ones that are on the front of your case or something. It should work fine once connected to a reliable, powered USB port.

went out yesterday and snagged a wired one.
with out a hitch the controller installed and plugged in the headset and windows sees it

installed steam and played just cause 2 demo. i hate third person but that games kinda fun.

oh and all the settings auto populated in steam for the setup. so pretty much my PC is now like my xbox only a lot more powerful.

Now i just need to find some pretty awesome free games to play, snagged TF2 but didn't play it yet.
anyone know of some free FPS games that are fast paced like cod?
i would really hate to buy cod again since i already own mw3 hardened for xbox

Blacklight: Retribution is kind of like CoD. It's F2P and actually really fun.
