GTX 670 impressions and switching from AMD

Thread Starter
Just installed a evga GTX 670 FTW card, few hours back. Im coming from a 6850 crossfire.

First thoughts,

GAMES:
smoother gameplay overall.
on Battlefield, the FPS is the about 10% higher, BUT when I turn AA deferred on the FPS does NOT drop drastically.

The game seems smoother than 6850 CF. like melted butter over pancakes smooth.
Maybe it was the microsttutter that I didnt realise.

I see there are new AA settings in games! interesting.
also, new graphic option appeared in JC2 , bokeh filter and water simulation. very nice surprises.

Call of Duty 4.

Game runs alot faster. textures seem sharper than the AMD setup?, weird, maybe it's just me.
not bashing AMD, have alotta respect for them, cut their logo into my case if that says anything. lolz

Ill update this thread on new findings in other games ,very soon, and compare to 6850 CF.

Crysis 2:

a game that justifies the 2GB of VRAM...?
Big improvement from the 6850 CF. The 2GB VRAM is being used alot, even without the HRT(high res textures) enabled. seeing 1.2GB used.

but, I 've read here on OCN i think that Crysis 2 uses all available VRAM when using the HRT enabled.

results:
with everything maxed, Ultra spec, dx11, seeing min of 57fps on 1440x900, constantly 70's or above.
Still need to enable HRT though, but "Frame rates are virtually identical, regardless of whether the high-resolution texture pack is enabled." - toms hardware

501

My performance seems in line with this, given these are average frames, and personally, i think, Average frames can be misleading sometimes.

What bothers me is that I will not play a game that runs under 60 fps, call me what you like.
Looking at upgrading my res, but the performance hit is a bit too big.

500

64 fps average 1920x1080, meaning a lot of fps dips in the 50's and high 40's. I don't like that.
most people will probably not mind those dips.

UPDATE:
I downloaded all the mods from this link. 19 June 2012.
http://source.crydev.net/viewtopic.php?f=308&t=71027

Just installed the MaldoHDv3 + blackfire + QM (You need to have Windows media player installed for maldo to install properly, it gives an error otherwise.)

OMW, the game looks amazing, and after using those settings in the Maldo HD config utility, I just maxed everthing, thinking: HERE comes lag.
to my suprise the game runs better with the mod. 60 fps constant. Tessellation on everything is great.

Also my VRAM of 2GB is maxing using 2GB constantly according to EVGA precision whereas before it was 1.5GB usage(no mods), with maldo it's 2GB usage.

Im super impressed at the guys modding it. Also the guy making the Maldo mod is actively working on version 3.0c, check his blog: http://maldotex.blogspot.com/

some screens:450
You can drive civ cars, pretty cool

Saints Row The third:

Game was broken on AMD, or thats how I experienced it, so wanted to play it, it now runs 60fps solid. through streets, note im using EVGA precision X frame rate target function. 60 fps target. Clocks the card up when there more demanding scenes and lowers clock at less demanding scenes to maintain 60 fps throughout.
although in some instances the game can drop below 60 fps. target FPS: Saves power and is nice on the eyes.

RAGE

Could never get this game to work properly without major lag or texture pop-ins, visit the RAGE thread and you'll see how I struggled. finished the game last year and never touched it again, today started the game with my 670. it runs flawlessly, there is still slight texture pop-ins, but thats to be expected if you've played this game. New graphics features: GPU transcoding exclusive to nvidia GPU's.

GPU transcoding definition:
"Transcode basically converts from the disk format to an in-memory format usable by the GPU. GPU Transcode performs this costly operation on the GPU instead of the CPU, which massively increases the number of pages that can be transcoded at a time (while maintaining 60 or near 60 hz). This has the visual effect of reducing the time between an item coming on screen and that item having the full, correct texture data available." - Yahoo Answers

My GPU temp is 42C, while playing the game for 45min! (50% fan speed, practically inaudible), 30% usage, thats amazing, seeing how good the game looks. I don't know why the game was broken on AMD. Can anyone run this game without, configs or anything else, clean install on AMD hardware without issues? I couldnt and I was pissed.

Final thoughts:

Really, really like the card, best bang for the buck ATM, I bought it in the US, which is considerably cheaper than in my country.

Physx
I installed Cellfactor Revolution, a physx game. can't run the extreme physx level's says I need Ageia PPU. sigh
Warmonger runs very, nice physx effects.
I can get a dedicated 9800 GT as PPU, for dirt cheap. but will it really help?

OTHER:
my desktop's res seems sharper, weird, maybe just a setting.

I'm running a ludicrous 1440x900 res, it will make some people cry on here, I know. Im working on a upgrade.

Temps and OC:
Im hitting 77C on stock in BF3, vsync OFF. no OC, blasphemy on OCN i know.
Wana OC, but the card is boosting to 1.2Ghz, so I don't know if nessesary?blushsmiley.gif,
EDIT: temps are at 50's with Vsync on, only tested for 15 min though

Been playing with EVGA precision, very nice software, love the fan control, never used it on MSI afterburner.

Some pics:

case a bit dusty.

AMD side mod, havent got any AMD hardware anymore, but no worries, still respect the company.

I'm probably one who doesn't mind frame rate dips into the 40s and 50s. To each his own. As long as a game is fluid and I don't notice the drops I don't care. Then again I'm not as big of a gamer as I once was, so my experience as well as my expectations have diminished over the years.

Welcome to the 670. It's a great GPU for the money right now.
I ran Crysis 2 completely maxed on my 670, played start to finish. There's a couple levels (they seem to be the ones with large bodies of water in them) where gpu usage oddly hovers in the 85-90% range, despite the FPS being in the low 50's. And in the sewers where there's water in the bottom of them, I drop to the 30's, but all you do is run through those.

So aside from these couple of levels/small spots in other levels (obviously these are H2O related glitches), FPS stays solid at 60 a LARGE % of the game, and drops below 50 are very rare. All told it's a very smooth experience. And I'm almost certain you're going to find that on a single card, the 40-60 range is MUCH less objectionable than it is on a Crossfire setup.

BTW, with the standard HRT mod the vram usage is 17-1800MB at 1920x1200 maxed in-game settings.

Glad you like your new card mate thumb.gif

The H2O simulation in JC2 is pretty sweet looking as well. Note though that in much the same way as Crysis 2 does when there's large H2O bodies present, your GPU usage will drop a bit, despite FPS doing the same, when H2O simulation is 'On'.

I think there's some water-related calcs that end up happening in both games where the 'usage' doesn't actually get 'counted' in the usage graph. My guess anyways.

Wow your temps are fairly high, especially for such a low res. Mine Stock no fan profile was getting around 63-65. With a fan profile and Very heavy overclocking, im getting around 58-59 MAX and that BF3 for a couple of hours. But im glad you like the card it is very solid! Im going to be throwing a water block on mine soon, interested on how it will perform being much cooler. And do NOT use the low end old card for physx believe it or not it hurts you more then it helps(linus did a vid on it)

Ye, the temps were' high, but higher my FPS goes, higher temp goes. atm the card is boosting to 1.230Mhz, with a fan profile fan speed at 60%(which I found, the sweet spot, for noise, the temps are 69) in crysis 2. those temps seem super low for stock air @ 1300, do you have vsync on?

Ye, im seeing 1500Mb Vram usage, I have a 1920x1080 monitor in my house, but it's not mine. ill try some gameplay with it.
I see your clocked at 1337, now I wana be leet also.

sorry for the double post

Always and of course, thats probably why. I stay at 60fps 99.9% of the time in bf3 with vsync, and there is no gain but temps to disable it.

Recently install a second GTX670 and upgrade my monitor, I played some Witcher 2 @ MAXED ubersampling everything , getting 60-90FPS, it's an awesome site. Gonna OC gonna try push CPU to 4.2 and give my cards a lil more OC, both at 1228mhz atm. super suprized at witcher 2 ubersampling performance.
