Office/Gaming Rig

Thread Starter
The video card on my current rig just died and my PSU has been on the fritz for months, so I figured I'd just build a new rig.

I mostly use my rig for office work now (I do a lot of remote Sys/Net Admin work from home) but I still occasionally play a few games of BF3/BC2/L4D. Not really big on overclocking these days (no reason for me to do so, really).

Would you all mind posting your thoughts on what I've come up with? I haven't really followed updates in hardware recently, so my knowledge is more limited than it used to be.

360

On a side note, I really like my machines to be quiet (too much working with rackmounts!). Not sure if the case/CPU fan combo is good match for that or not.

You probably will be fine with 8GB of ram unless you start configuring VM's on this rig, and could bump down to a 3570 for gaming, and also could get much less of a mobo if you don't plan to OC. I like the rest.

Like the other guy said, you can bring the cost down with the Motherboard and CPU. The motherboard you picked is slightly overkill for what you want to do. Oh yeah, 8gb of ram is plenty also.

You could always take that money and invest it into a newer/nicer GPU. Or just save it!

This would be a nice upgrade rolleyes.gif

Here is a better choice for a cpu, its a $100 cheaper and unlocked.

Better RAM and it overclocks like a champ, only costs $48 (You should buy this while its in stock)

No Problem, btw this should be a very quiet computer. If the stock fan on the H60 is getting too loud try two of the lower speed Sythe Gentle Typhoons in a push pull configuration. The Gigabyte GPU's are pretty quiet until about 50% then they get a little louder but not by much. But a custom fan profile will also fix this.

I had my GPU ghetto rigged so that it would be super quiet but cool real good. Worked well for a long time, but something got messed up with my machine and all my fans haven't been working correctly (CPU/PSU included). Hopefully nothing environmental that will carry over.

If all the fans had issues i'm guessing its a motherboard issue.

I suspected as much, but not sure why it would be acting up. Not that it's exactly an upscale model :<<br />
Not a problem, I guess. I've been wanting to upgrade for a while and haven't had an excuse until now. Little disappointed that my GPU died (it worked fine considering I only use one small 19" monitor for gaming, a small 17" for some admin work).

It does suck, I recently had a GTX 560 randomly die on me.
