with a budget of 1200, you can build a new system. that's a good thing because there really isn't anything worth salvaging out of your old machine. you can't even salvage your video card because it's an AGP card instead of a PCIe... so you are looking at a brand new build from the groud up.

with that said, you have to 1st establish what form factor you want to go with and what your eventual goal is for this machine. personally i'd recommend starting off with a mATX build and go from there. mATX is a good form factor to learn on. it will give you a better idea of what you want in a system.(size, noise level, air/liquid cooling, etc...) just remember when allocating $ for parts, keep in mind that different parts have varying rate of depreciation. for example, if you buy a quality case, it will hold its value for a decade or more. but no matter how much you spend on a video card, it will be out dated in a matter of 3 to 5 years.

general rule of thumb, spend well on case, powersupply, and HSF. those usually hold their value over a long period of time and multiple builds. (especially on powersupply, it's the 1st and last line of defense for your system against failure) other parts will depreciate at a much faster rate and will tend to need replacing as your taste in games become more extravagant.

I have some thoughts and sketches, when I have more time I'll upload. The one thing about the wood case is I'm worried about the noise the glass door will make if not tightly fitting, and I hate the sound of glass rattling. Also, air cooling is ideal for me (cheap).

personally, i would steal the airflow design from the FT02 and improve upon it. one of the primary issues i have with modern high end cases is the poor air filters they include in the system... IMO IF you are going to pay the cost of fan noise, you might as well get the benefit of having an air purifier (hepa filters for you computer so the exhaust is CLEAN air for your room biggrin.gif ) we would ALL be healthier if our computers came with hepa filters since we have the computer on so many hours in a day biggrin.gif

you are building a custom case anyway, so you just make the intake the same size as a hepa filter. after that, your computer fans would have a dual purpose of cleaning the air in your room as well as cooling your system down. this design would have particular value to anyone suffering from allergies or bronchial disease

Is liquid cooling worth the investment if I won't be doing any heavy overclocking or gaming?

Here's a basic sketch of what I'm thinking. It's a basic pine wood rhombus and will have a detachable door and sliding glass door for access. Tell me what you all are thinking, I'm open to suggestions!

Edit: This has been revised so the 2x80mm fans are pushing air up through the drive rack. 700

Basically scraping this design. There are some things I like about the design, for instance, the location of all the parts inside, fan locations, and the grated top for additional airflow.

Does anyone happen to know how I could hook up all six case fans with only 3 power cords (Y-splitters/molex adaptors/run four of them direct from the PSU)? What would you recommend in my case? I also want to hook up a fan speed controller.

So over the last couple of weeks I've been working a bit on the case. I have a the cuts I need (minus a bit of fitting issues encountered) and am starting the routing in the side boards. Still have a lot to do: finish routing, 2 doors (main access point & drive rack) and a window to cut out, assembly (screw & glue), sand, stain, trim (walnut), and finish. From there I will be able to fit all the hardware and start installing it and then the software. Should be done by the end of the week. I'll have more time to since I quit my job now too.

1) Sides are both cut out!
