[Computer World]Apple charges 54% more to replace Retina MacBook Pro's battery - Page 5

I don't understand the big deal here. I would like to think anyone willing to shell out <$2200 will pay the extra $200-300 Applecare. If you have this Applecare, aren't all these repairs covered for free for the next 3 years?

Woohoooo think different guys! Pay $200 to replace a BATTERY. It doesn't even cost that much to replace a CAR battery.

Car batteries are standardized and by-design serviceable.

I don't get it. The MBP's battery is also much bigger.
Additionally, $199 isn't that far off from what Dell charges for a similar capacity battery.

It's not 'fail engineering', it's a tradeoff for a thinner chassis.

Please explain how glueing down the battery makes a thinner chassis

Though I think engineering wise gluing down the battery is beyond insane BUT I can see how it can make it thinner. Glue is thinner than retention clasps, clips, etc., that can be used to keep a battery from bouncing around, plus lighter than anything that would have to be used to mechanically keep it immobile.

~ Like someone else said, the battery is probably glued in to help with the frame rigidity among other things.

The battery is probably close enough to vital parts that might get damaged if it was bouncing around.

AFAIK most batteries swell up a little bit when they get very hot and if it's squeezed into a tight enclosure that may cause some problems.

As soon as anything apple is mentioned people storm to bash them

This is completely illogical. Price has absolutely no bearing on how difficult a replacement is. You could definitely argue for the vice versa scenario, but that's not how you worded it.
