deleted volume.

Thread Starter
tl;dr
deleted my volume, recovering takes forever

So I got an SSD, installed my OS, has been about 1-2 weeks and my old 1tb hdd had a 100gb partition on it for the old os.

Wanted to format this and get rid of it. Somehow, I managed to extend the volume and make it "dynamic" - I was like no, I don't want dynamic, I just want one whole hdd, and without thinking twice, I hit...delete partition

1TB is a lot of information.

So as soon as I saw the hdd turn into unallocated space, I had a panic attack. I calmed down, looked around and found something called Hiren's Boot CD...tried to recover the partition but instead it created a new partition !

Did not want to mess with it anymore...came here, saw someone recommend EASEUS - downloaded it, recovering...says about 7 hours or so.

*crossing my fingers*

okay. /vent

Well, after creating a new partition options are more limited. Before that (when unallocated), TestDisk would be able to fully recover the missing partition.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

Now that the drive has been reformatted, you have to try to recover files that haven't yet been overwritten. You can try programs like PhotoRec, Recuva, or that EaseUS one.

Oh, the drive has not been reformatted, but the partition has been allocated.

I see the files in EASEUS but it is limited to 1gb on the free version frown.gif

I will try testdisk and see what happens.

So i've run into a bit of a predicament here.

I'm able to recover most if not all the files...however I need 730GBs...

My only available hdd is this 1TB which has not been formatted, thus I can't recover the data on it.

My question is if I format the drive, I won't be able to recover the data, correct?

I am in the process of extracting hard drives out of all the laptops I own at the moment in order to temporarily store this info.

correct. Formatting writes zero's to all sectors i believe which will overwrite your previous data, leaving you with nothing but space. DONT DO THAT!!!! i have and wow...big mistake. if you cant do it i dare say take it to a computer repairman and he'll charge u 40$ to recover...not a big loss if you have your life on a drive

lol, it isn't about the money as much as it is about the time.

I've got it hooked up to a 500gb hdd from a lappy....saving 308gbs, apprx time...12 hours X_X

then another 12+ for the 370gbs left.

Atleast it is being recovered.

If you don't have a spare drive... buy a spare drive. It's not worth it screwing around with precious data for $80. If you lose that data, how will you feel about the $80? How will you feel about $2500 professional data recovery? tongue.gif

I keep 1-2 spare drives around for when I require an empty drive to recover info off another one. If you feel bad about having a spare... use it for backups when you're done with it. That way you'll never get in this situation again. thumb.gif

Yeah, funny thing is I had ordered a WD 500GB portable drive saturday night...this happened sunday night frown.gif

Anyways, I got all my data recovered to two different HDDs, just transferring it back to the originals.

Thanks to everyone that helped!
p.s. I'm using "Total Commander" to transfer files - anything that would be considered faster in terms of transfer speeds?
