Cleaning kits for DSLRs

Thread Starter
I am looking for a nice solid cleaning kit for the sensor, lenses, and mirror.

I came across this
Many recommend the Rocket blower.
But is it a good deal, worth it for $23? But it does come with a good microfiber cloth. I saw that many use the sensor stamps, I have noticed that my sensor does have some particles on it, and so does the mirror.
When I take a photo of a white piece of paper with f/22, I do notice a lot of crap all over.

Would this also fix stuck, hot pixels?

will not fix hot pixels to the best of my knowledge. BUT rocket blower and good microfiber cloth are the best tools to have in your kit

I've cleaned my sensors with cotton swabs and blowers. You just have to be gentle with the swab. They won't get rid of really stuck on dust and of course won't fix hot pixels.

Okay sounds good, but cotton swabs leave more crap around, I guess the blower would take care of that.

SO should I just buy the kit or just the blower?

The swabs will just essentially push off the dirt. The blower will help remove it. Swabs shouldn't leave anything, since you shouldn't use excessive force or rapid movements.

Just the blower. Should be less than $10. If you have a local camera shop then they will carry blowers. Might a good thing to pop into one.

One thing to look out for would be that some new blowers will have a powder in them. I just clean my blower with Isopropyl alcohol and make sure it fully dries. Last thing you want is alcohol on the mirror or sensor.

Yeah I better clean it than, alcohol would just kill the sensor.

I live close to Washington DC, and go there 3 times a week. I googled: "camera store near DC" and that doesn't really help.

It finds a lot of Ritz Camera stores, and bunch of other stores.

I came across this, I could go visit it but does it look good: http://www.yelp.com/biz/penn-camera-washington#query:camera%20store

You need to use multiple tools to get the job done. The tool required is dependent on the type of cleaning required.

For example - dust - first try blower. If that does not clear the surface move to the next tool.

Cotton swab/lens tissue papers/mf cloth/lens-sensor pens and sensor brushes. If this doesn't work, move to next tool.

Wet cleaning. I have always used eclipse cleaning fluids with pec pads and sensor swabs. It is proven to work, and has never failed me. You must assure that you get the, correct type of eclipse cleaning solution for your cameras sensor. Using the wrong type can make for ineffective cleaning and or damage to the filter* that covers your sensor.

*Some sensors do not have this filter.

Dead/hot/stuck pixels are caused by a defect in the sensor cell(s). You cannot clean them off like dust. There are several methods to map/re-map pixels so that they are no longer displayed in images. There are many tools and or methods the end user can utilize. You can also send the camera to the manufacturer, or service center to have them perform the mapping/re-mapping.

I am just going to use the blower, MF cloth, and lens/sensor pens.

I don't need wet cleaning since my camera isn't that dirty. I found many stores near me, but a blower costs $11-13, whereas about $8 online. Same thing with the lenspens and cloths.

I thought stores would have them MUCH cheaper, but no, they are not. frown.gif
