Crashing in Vbox but not in Win7 smp

Thread Starter
Hi all, i have been folding for a few months now and i recently tried to set up a Vbox using the *How to get 140PPD with your 3930k* thread. After setting it up i got a 6901p wich gave me 100k PPD and after that all i got was 6904p WU. The problem is that the VB crashed 4 times in 6 days, wich cause me to lose each WU and start a new one, if there is a way to save/reload the current WU i don't know. It even crashed at stock speed...
What i find weird is that i fold 24/7 in Win7 smp and it NEVER crashed. I sometime leave my comp on for 3-4 days without touching it, i know it don't crash because i always leave realtemp so i know if the system has reboot or not.
My temps are always in the 60's so it's not a heat issue.

What could cause this? A bad WBox intall? Is VMware better? If so what would be a good guide for me to start, i tried using the Lynux imagefrom the previous guide but it wouldnt recognize it. Remember that im a noob with Lynux.

Smp is not bad but (50-60PPD) but i could get lot more using lynux.

Thks in advance, post your question if you have any ill do my best to reply.

EDIT: I had allocate 4mb of ram to Vbox, could it be this? i can allocate much more if needed...

4mb?? Do you mean 4gb? because 4gb is plenty, even for -hugeadv. It's notorious for being hard on your ram and if you're crashing at stock it might be a good idea to run memtest.

Try using vmware player 3.0 and Ubuntu 10.10.  That's what my TC folding teammate does on his Windows 7 box, and he completes 12 core bigadv WU's without anything crashing.

Don't bother with VMware as it will only allow the virtual machine to use a max of 8 threads whereas you have 12. wink.gif

Actually I don't think that version does now that he mentions it.

The VM crashed, or your PC crashed?

Most likely he got a BSOD, then he lost all his progress on a WU.

My suggestion is to reassess your overclock setting once again.

It happened to me exactly the same thing: I folded on my Win7 without any problem and my machine occasionally crashed when I folded on Vbox Linux. It crashed more often if you have something else running behind the scene, e.g. folding on a GPU at the same time, opening a browser, or running a CPU intensive programs, etc. The issue improves a bit when I tone down my overclock. You really need a stable overclock to run hugeadv on your rig.
