Windows 8 constant freezing

Hi everyone, decided to try Windows 8 RC, was not expecting this many problems :/

Fisrst of all, it constantly freezes in this odd way, where I can still move mouse and drag windows around, and things very slowly stop working, first I won't be able to use the task bar (thing at bottom of screen), entering text on anything will result in lag on the inputted words, and apps will slowly stop responding. Ctrl Alt Delete will bring up the right screen, which will immediately become unresponsive, and will force a restart. After the restart, some apps will forget their settings, for example, steam will forgotten that I've used this PC for steam, and dota 2 will restart some ingame settings, but not all.

When I am trying to play dota, every few minutes the GPU usage will hit 0% for 3-5 seconds and sometimes dota will crash to the desktop, but I can still get back to the game with all the sounds, but no visuals (it will remain on the desktop). Force quitting and restarting the game temporarily solve the problem, only to bring it to round 2 of everything crashing.

I've tried disabling SLI, but that does nothing, I have all drivers up to date as far as I know and my system specs looks like this
3570k
16gb RAM
GTX460 SLI
120Gb SSD
2x2TB raid 0

Nothing is overclocked, everything is brand new except hard drives and graphics cards.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I only decided to try W8 because friends were having no problems with their copies frown.gif

We have the same CPU and brand of GPU, I was using the stock Windows 8 and it was locking on me as well, I'd have to hit the reset button and then Windows would do a chkdsk of all my hard drives.. I gave up, there were no events explaining the crash.

So many problems, don't even know where to begin. If I leave PC on to idle and then lock Windows, it will die on me within 2 hours.

I had the same problems! Never could figure out the cause. I was using the old 296 drivers at the time.

Well, you should expect that windows 8 is still buggy, it's not even out for consumers yet.

Same issue here. Luckily for me, it RTM's in a month anyway, and as an MSDN member, I'll just deploy it then.

Well, that was obvious, but I didn't think this level of bugs was going to occur.

Figured out my Windows 8 problem, there is a feature called Hyper-V for virtualization, if you have the VMM (Advanced CPU option) turned off (in the BIOS), it seems to eventually crash. Might be just certain hardware its not detecting properly, since we have the same CPU.

There is a secondary "fix" but I believe I reverted it, here is where I found the information:

http://rudiv.se/Blog/general/windows-8-release-preview-browser-freeze-fix

Since goofing with these, it hasn't crashed. I need to verify if I turned the bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes back to no properly to be sure. (edit: yes, when I run bcdedit, it shows the option set back to no, so the only change is the BIOS setting).
