This has been in beta since 2010. For over two years you could "play it", and before that, was an Alpha, though to be honest, it's beta was less of an Alpha than most companies. They released it to beta status early, because they said they were running out of money and needed funding.
It is due to release this year; and performance is getting worse with each update, and features are being changed so much from one update to the next, it appears as if they have no overall idea of what they want.
The fact is, the graphics are nice, and the UI is good; but nothing about the graphics make them really that high end. Many 2008 games had graphics around this level...and on a much larger scale...and performed far better.
The game is built on their own Engine, Spark, which was a mistake. They had roughly 4 Team members, and a Source Engine license...and about 60% of the work done, when they decided to make their own Engine.
The release date of 2007, was missed.
The release date of 2008, missed.
2009, announced and missed. SO they announced no more release dates, til now, they claim summer of this year. So months away it is, and in a state that is still very Alpha.
With a premium 35$ pricetag. I loved NS1 and NS2 is pretty fun at times...but for 35$, you expect more than what it is...I paid 18$ during a Christmas sale...but yeah. @ 18$, I just barely felt it was worth it, the state it is in now ,content wise, is 20-25$, tops, but optimization wise...
Let you understand that my system, 8GB RA 1866mhz, GTX670 FTW Edition @W 1290mhz Core & 6912mhz memory, with a 2500K @ 4.5GHZ, and a 128GB SSD...that I am achieving, 30-44FPS in this, not really maxed out. =/
And as you can see in the video's; while the graphics are nice...the performance, I doubt, can be fixed within a mere few months, and if they release like this, like RO2 did, they will deal the last death blow to NS2. The maps an an issue of mine; oft they are smaller than the base Counter-Strike maps.
Yes, if you've played CS, then de_dust2 is bigger than the current maps in NS2...also, people oft complain Call of Duty has small maps, no? Those are at least 3x the size of NS2 maps. It feels so cramped; granted, this is the idea, for atmosphere and gameplay purposes, but feel the maps need to be greatly increased in size, by at least 2-3x.
The fact is, from the start point, you can be at the enemies base in under a minute...rushes are frequent in the game and some games last under 3 minutes...just kills it at times, if the other Team is stacked.
On a plus note, the new UI they made is incredible and I love it, compared to the older one, very helpful, very Sci-Fi, and well done.
Just performance is still below what is acceptable for a game mere months from release.
Oh, and NS COmbat isn't in NS2; the developers said they felt it was a mistake and ruined the community, of course, user made mods may put it back in, but nothing Official.
