Recommend a CPU for home computer

Ok OCN, one of my step-son's friends family is looking to purchase a computer. They have asked me for help.

I am looking for a CPU that CAN overclock. (the son make this clear to me)

They will be using it for internet/school work/video playback with some possible gaming at 1080p.

He is on a somewhat budget and I was thinking of a max of $150 for a cpu.

I was thinking of getting an i7-920 since they are cheap and are still good performers for the price.

What do you guys recommend? an i7-920 a good purchase?

The i7 920 is a superb CPU, even to this day. If you can find one for that price, by all means go for it.

Of course, none of the newer Intel CPU's (below the 2500k) overclock at all, an un-overclockable SB i5 may be faster, though I doubt it.

You may want to have a look at a SB i3, they won't bottleneck an single video card and they're much cheaper than the 920, even second hand. You could get a better GPU with the saved money.

Have you bought any of the parts yet?

I was looking at SB i3's but no overclocking that really sucks. I think the 920 would be a better choice. An overkill for a home pc but, oh well. The gpu is probably gonna be low end.

I have not bough anything yet. Once he gets me the cash I will start buying. I will be buying a few things second hand if I can. for example SSD, PSU, CPU. thank you
