Recommendation for a very high quality headset

Hey all,

I've been looking around a bit at the professional-grade headphones that a lot of you use and I'd like to try some out as I've recently gotten real in to dubstep in addition to the many other genres of music that I listen to. My problem is that I'm looking for a headset rather than headphones so that I can use it for in-game communication as well.

I currently use the Razer Tiamats (which I got for free for a review so don't yell if they're not worth the money) and I honestly think they sound better than any headset I've ever used... but I've never used any of these headphones that you all use.

So I'm wondering, do you have any suggestions for a headset for someone who would like to be an audiophile but wants to know what he's been missing?

Instead of a headset, I would recommend getting some high quality cans and a separate mic. You'll find the quality of both will be much higher that way, particularly with the mic. The mics that come in the all-in-one headsets are generally garbage, as you'll find from many of the reviews of such items on newegg.

If you're determined to get a headset, though, avoid the ones that market themselves as "5.1 surround sound" and the like, since stereo headphones portray surround sound movement just as well. The whole surround sound for headphones deal is just a marketing ploy to get you to spend more money for an identical or sometimes even worse experience.

I'm not really determined to get a headset I suppose. For some reason I just worry about outside noise with a separate mic as I use Skype generally for voice communication.

Well, with that said, what headphones would be recommended for the best combination of gaming and audio quality for someone who doesn't yet know the lingo but generally listens to dubstep, metal, and classic rock?

Also, any mic suggestions?

Thanks

EDIT: Some statistics - I'm currently using onboard sound but have access to whatever sound cards Best Buy carries at a pretty heavy discount if they would be absolutely necessary. I have a basic 5.1 creative card around here somewhere too. I'd say my budget would be around $200 unless the difference is tremendous moving up to maybe $300. Lastly, I will only ever use them at home.

These are what I use, and they work great.

Sennheiser HD 280 PRO

Samson Go Mic

for a total of about $140. The Sennheisers are great quality, with a nice sound for both gaming and music (at least in my experience), and the Samson mic is inexpensive, still sounds good. No problems with excessive background noise, and it's lower profile than some standalone mics I've seen.

I'm sure the HD 280s would sound better with a dedicated sound card, but you don't have to have one. I use onboard sound (Realtek ALC892 drivers) and no problems.

I love my ax pros, true 5.1 surround sound! The only complaint I have is the material that they are made out of. It's a very cheap plastic.

All in all they have terrific sound quality (and a great sounding mic as well) and are very comfortable. Paired with my game booster sound card and a game like bf3, there is no comparison. That is when taking a $200 and under price range into account. Don't know how crazy you want to get but $300+ costing headphones seem a little crazy to me.

I've used the AX Pros before and they were great but I've got a true 7.1 headset now that I think sounds a bit better honestly.

Trittons are AWFUL. I've owned 3 sets and every single one has broke, because the plastic is extremely cheap. One drop on the floor or carpet and they are done for.

Also, its only 5.1surround. Get a headset with 7.1 and you will notice a big difference.

Right? biggrin.gif You only have two ears...what are the extra speakers for??? Stereo cans work for gaming just fine. It's all about the timing and sound detail. Put on some stereo cans, check out this video, and then tell me you need 5.1 or 7.1 headphones to get 3D sound.
