Actually, the loop should be almost completely full before powering the pump on for the first time. These pumps were not meant to push air. If there is liquid in the tubing before the pump, inside the pump, and the tubing after the pump, the pump should work without cavitation. If there is air somewhere, it can cavitate. If the pump cavitates long enough, it could burn-up.
