I need a pc that would be a stand alone server in a lan party for 20 pcs playing CSS or BF2. What kind of system would run that very smoothly? Would it need over 2 gigs? FX-55?

Nah, an 3.0Ghz Intel (Netburst) or AMD A64 3500+ and 1GB of RAM should server it well.

Thanks money isn't an issue. Does anyone have actual experience though? Sure, I think a 3700+ and a gig of ram would be good but I don't know for sure and can't just assume that will be ok.

I have a A64 3800+ 1GB RAM, run 32 bots (expert) + 4 ppls with no problem. Just need to keep CPU unused (no other applications running besides the server) and have srcds.exe high priority game should be as smooth as it can be.

You could get a Socket A rig, with a NF7-S V2.0 (Or similiar overclocking boards) and at least 1 gig of RAM.
All you need to do is overclock the CPU, and it is pretty much done.

I wouldnt use an average desktop CPU. If you're building a computer strictly to be a server, go with a dual-core xeon or an opteron and 2GB of ECC Ram. The OCN CSS server runs just itself on dual xeons and 2gb of ram, and it's still laggy at times.
