Help with an Intel Build? Please... $5000

Thread Starter
Hello.

I need a hand with an Intel build. Budget is $5000. This is going to be used by a co-worker in the financial department. He is going to be running 6 monitors with a program in each that shows stocks and commodity prices. The software is fairly demanding for some reason) At this point we are leaning towards a more powerful PC so we can use it for multiple purposes in the future.

For the card, I am going to snag the ASUS HD7970 DirectCU II. Need to know what Motherboard and CPU you suggest for this budget. For the power supply we already have new Corsair AX 1200 and AX850 units, although both are probably overkill they are reliable and already on hand.

The coworker has also asked that this PC be as silent as possible. Recommendations on great coolers that are extremely quiet would also be appreciated.

I realize there are loads of fake $5000 budget threads, but this one is not.

thanks in advance.

CPU - ?
Mobo- ?
Case- ?
RAM- ?
PSU- AX 850/1200
GPU- 7970 DirectCU II
SSD- ?

Anything else?

5000$ for a work project? Jeezes Christ give me that money! tongue.gif

Anyway, let's see...

CPU:
Intel i7 3930K - 550$. Seems to me like the financial department is a department where speed and accuracy are musts. Hence this CPU.

MOBO:
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme - 430$. Yes, it's total overkill, but with a 5000$ budget, why not?

RAM:
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600MHz - 120$

SSD:
Crucial M4 128GB - 120$

HDD:
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB - 99$

PSU:
Corsair AX850W - 170$

CASE:
NZXT Switch 810 - 170$ - One of the best cases around.

GPU:
EVGA GTX 670 FTW - 420$ x 2 = 840$ For six monitors to show decently, I'd go SLI. Defo since you have the budget for it.

MONITORS:
ASUS S23A700D - 300$ x 6 = 1800$ - Six 120Hz monitors oughta do the trick. tongue.gif

KEYBOARD:
RAZER Blackwidow - 72$ - With so much money on your hands, might as well get a mechanical one. Types easier. Or you could just go for a 5$ generic one.

MOUSE:
Just any generic one will do.

TOTAL:
4357$. Well under your budget. smile.gif

I approve of this. Couple things I would change, though. He must have faster ram. While nothing faster than 1600mhz is actually necessary, 2400 speeds are always good for epeen.
I like this kit.

The next change I would make is the video card. In a $5K build, why not include the best GPU there is, currently, the GTX680, or the GTX690. I have a feeling, too, that this guy would rather have 2 30" monitors rather than 6 smaller ones. Like U3011. You could spend the money saved on a 690 rather than a 670.

As for the PSU, I would strongly recommend the Antec HCP-1200... I just prefer it over COrsair.

How up on watercooliing are you? I would go for a watercoolde dual Xeon 2011(dont even know if there out, but dual cpus are capable on that budget) with 680s or something with that budget.

With 5000$ budget I wouldn't opt for any RAZER products really. They have the tendency to break. Plus mx blues might not be the best ones in work environment... due to noise.

If efficiency, accuracy, speed are a must, I'd get a Topre keyboard.

Other than that looks good, although you could opt for a little better RAM as you've got the budget for it. Something like 2000-2400 cas 9-10.

UltraVolta is on the right track, but here are the changes I'd make.

Get a larger SSD. With that budget you can afford it and it will be worth it to have extra space, especially if you intend to have it last a long time.

Get at least 2 hard drives with however much space you need and go for RAID 1 (or 5/6/10 if you get more drives). Since this is for business the data integrity will probably be helpful, and you can back up the SSD to the RAID array as well.

The switch 810 is a great case, but unless you watercool it I don't think you'll be getting the most out of it, and it isn't the quietest. Fractal's define series is designed to be quiet, but the trade off for quiet is less cooling ability. So if you aren't doing extreme overclocking and you're air cooling, go with a define xl. If you watercool, go for the switch 810.

I'm not sure what the difference is between amd and nvidia for that many screens, but if you go for 670 SLI get the Asus dc2 or dc2t. It's one fo the quietest cards around right now. If you go the watercooling route, get reference models so you can get blocks for them.

120 Hz monitors are nice, but you won't be taking advantage of them for gaming so they may not be necessary. They're supposed to make the desktop and any application look smoother, but if you want to save some cash or go IPS those also seem like viable options.

For cpu cooling, the NH-D14 and the silver arrow are probably the best air coolers. For water, you can start off with a rasa kit or something, add more rad space, and then the gpus. Or just build your own custom setup.

For the motherboard, the RIVE is a great board but another good option is the p9x79 ws, its geared more towards workstations and business performance.

Don't get a black widow keyboard. The switches themselves are great, but the quality on the rest of it isn't the best. It also isn't very professional looking, and the glossy finish tends to get very dirty. If you want a mechanical keyboard. filco, ducky, leopold, das, and rosewill are all good brands to look at.

Edit: wow this got busy while i was typing tongue.gif

get a srx with 2 8 core xeons.. and a gtx 690. that should run all the monitors adn carry any taxi on cpu loads. also you wont need to oc the chips (cant anyways) so you can get a cooler and jsut use a low rpm fan also seeing as its a bisuness thing i would recomend raid 1 so maybe pick up 2 M4's the 512gb ones and raid them in backup just in case.
