Right at $500 AMD first time build - Page 6

I actually have a 700W Toughpower in my older rig, but (at least going by the Newegg prices), they're insanely high-priced right now. Over $110 (on Newegg, anyway) is really, really high for a 600W PSU when there are lots of others around that range that are of comparable or even higher quality for less.

A couple other options:
Rosewill Capstone 650W
(there's also a modular version available for around 20 more if you want it)

Seasonic M12II 620W

XFX Core Edition 650W

Get a bigger power supply. 550W PSU's are really cheap TBH

How can you tell if a PSU is a good one or not? I am having trouble figuring that out on my own just by looking at different types.

there are other materials here in ocn and we also have a psu guru on board.

http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies

you want one that is 80 plus certified. i based mine close to what's needed to run the gpu(s) and if anything higher on sale of good quality - that i'll buy. a bad psu can take out other components of your rig.

There are a few ways.

1. The easiest way, is what company makes it. Antec, Cooler Master, Seasonic, Corsair, OCZ, all those good companies usually make good Power supplies.

2. What is the efficiency rating. All of the really good PSU's will have a 80+ Gold rating. However 80+ Bronze and silver are fine too.

3. Look for some review, and see if you can dig up any info of the product.

4. MAKE SURE IT'S NOT A CHEAP CHINESE POWER SUPPLY!
Do not skimp on the PSU, do not buy cheap, useless junk.

5. How many AMP's are on the 12V Rail(s). You want around 40AMP's on the 12V rail(s)

6. Price. If it just seems to cheap to be true, then it is. All the Good PSU's cost far more than the cheap chinese ones do.

So this is a good choice then? It has a single 12v rail and its 80+ Bronze

Ehh, they're okay, not bad, but rule of thumb normally is, if it says "Gamer" or "FATAL1TY" it is overpriced. The Antec green series PSUs are a better buy. Rosewill Capstone and Green series are good PSUs too. thumb.gif

Just got me paranoid now for how much power I'll need with what rdr09 and Kny were debating tongue.gif

EDIT: double quoted for some reason wheee.gif

EDIT again: If you can find a decent one around the same wattage from that microcenter that'd be great...the ones you suggested they dont have except an Earthwatts green 650 thats $10 more than the gamer series
