Setting up a new room, need furniture advice

Hey guys,

So I move into my new apartment in a couple weeks, and I'm looking to get a new desk, bed frame, and some other storage. My general theme is black and blue, with main furniture pieces being black with cobalt accents. I'm also going for something of a contemporary look, if you would keep that in mind smile.gif.

Currently, I'm looking at the IKEA galant desk, specifically this one:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39807469/

I have a surround set up, so I need lots of room. I also plan to keep my tower on my desk.

In terms of bed frames, I don't have any pieces in mind. But I do like the appearence of the IKEA malm bed, it just doesn't appear very sturdy. Perhaps you guys have any experience with the frame or others of a similar appearance.

Also, does anyone have experience with any of IKEA storage furniture?

Thanks guys!

I have the hemnes, and love it. Make sure that whichever you get, you glue the wood pegs in the areas that you won't need to disassemble in the future. It makes them much sturdier. I was looking at the Malm, but wanted a foot board as well.

As far as a desk, check this out: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2012/05/creative-ikea-desk.html

I personally have the 47" vika w/ the basic $3.50 legs and it is a bit too small to have the desktop on the desk, the 60" would be perfect if you want it up high. the 47" with a Lack table next to it for your rig is perfect.

Also, if you are set on the Galant, check the clearance section, I see them in there every time I go in. Last week they had 6 of them (San Diego store) for $25 each - I couldn't find the flaws.

For bedroom storage, I have the Malm 6 drawer chest and the matching side stands. They are great, but make sure you don't overload the bottom 2 drawers of the 6 drawer as the frame is very close to the drawer bottom and the flex makes it rub a tiny bit. Once again, glue all the wooden dowels while you assemble, makes it much stronger. I also highly suggest the glass tops so that you can sit things on them and not scratch them.

Well, I'm actually not a foot board guy.. but how sturdy does the bed feel? Do u have slats?

And I'm kind of looking for a corner desk... but that is one slick hack!! Definitely going to have to consider it.

Also, thanks for the other advice.. I <3 IKEA.

I didn't get the slats for my bed as I went with a traditional box spring and mattress. The bed is very sturdy - significantly more so than the stock metal frame that came with my box and mattress. The bed you are looking at there are 2 versions, a short and a tall. The short is meant to have the slats and just use a mattress only, while the tall is meant for a more traditional box and mattress (which I prefer - I actually used the short version for a couple months when I moved out from my ex wifes place, and it wasnt bad at all. The only problem I had was the sheets not staying in place as the mattress is sitting on wood and you don't get the pinching of the box spring, and that the mattress would move around a lot during more vigorous activities wink.gif)

If I were you, I would get the tall version and a Mattress/box spring set on sale somewhere (Costco usually has some good deals).

You, sir, are a god among men. That would be PERFECT for me. I already have a mattress + box spring and crappy as metal frame thing, and was hoping to find something that would take advantage of that! So in this scenario, does the box spring go on the ground, with the frame around it? I've never owned a bed frame other than a metal one... so I'm just really unsure of the design hahaha.

Thanks,

-GA

I'm in the processes of re-doing my room and got a bunch of Ikea furniture. I have that malm bed, it's very sturdy. I just have the slats with the mattress on top and surprised at how strong that actually is. Well I'm only 155lbs but I've stood on the rails and walked on it. I also got the matching 6 drawer chest too. Still need to get a desk though. That malm bed, you don't have to get the headboard if you don't like it. You can just grab two of the end pieces and have it short on both sides since they're in separate boxes. Because I was thinking of making a loft out of it and should of got two end pieces instead of the headboard, but I can still go back and just buy the end piece.

Nope, the box sits on the top and mattress goes on that, so you see the whole box frame. That is why the taller headboard.
You can check out the difference here: http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/customer_service/assembly_instructions.html#10
