Need options to leave Comcast in the dust

Found out last night that my Comcast promo ended and now my bill is $60 more. So I called in and after two tiers worked out some what of a better deal for the time being. I am ready to free myself from grip of these cable chains that hold me down. I need ideas. What are my options other than cable or slapping a dish to my home. All I really want is my local channels (3,5,etc.), I watch a few shows on HBO, and randomly I watch other programs as I surf, but nothing set in stone. I have a 1 yr old Samsung 55 HDTV with built in wifi and apps, a older samsung with no Internet capabilities, bluray player with built in wifi, and a Comcast cable Internet connection with a docsis 3 modem, netgear n900 wireless, 30mb down. What would be my best option to watch local channels, record some shows, and still be able to watch other network programming (A&E, Animal Planet, HBO, etc)?

Directv. My bill is 74.99 per month. That includes A&E,Animal planet. Dish network doesn't have either, not at least in the same plan. My mom has the At&t u-verse,which includes dvr.Her bill is about 85.00 per month.

Other than Comcast or a Dish, you're pretty much limited to U-Verse if it's even available in your area.

I would rather not switch to another provider. I would like to get rid of my dependency on these horribly regulated companies. Plus I have never been fond of strapping a dish to the outside of my home. If I could get a small antenna for the HD local channels them stream the cable shows that I want

Well then there you go. Pick up a good HD antenna and think of it as a one-time investment to forego the cable bill from now on.

Additionally, if you have Comcast internet and put a splitter before your modem, you can typically get local HD, though when that's what we did in my apartment it was kind of hit or miss. We got the digital converter box now, but we almost never watch TV anyway. Netflix is more than enough. And as you said, between Netflix, Hulu Plus, an HD Antenna, and a decent internet connection is all you need to enjoy probably 90% of the decent content on television, minus sports. And if you don't hold live sports as a high priority there is really minimum reason to even have cable or satellite these days.

I watch 0 sports. But now what I am finding is some shows are not even offered online. I cannot find any travel channel but on iTunes for $3 an episode which would rack up fast. Still on the fence need more research I guess. If I end up paying for multiple online episodes and services I might hit the cost of my Comcast. Really seems to be no "perfect" option.

If all you need are local channels, install an antenna on your roof.
