Gameserver server machine

Thread Starter
Hi guys

I'm the leader/founder of a gaming community. We host over 15 servers for different games (mostly Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2) and we're in need of a new machine. We're currently on a Dell R210 II with a Xeon E3-1270 CPU, I cannot upgrade this as it is a dedicated server, I want to go colo which means I need a new machine. My budget is around the cost of the server below here.

I'm interested in Supermicro as they make quality products and they are great, I want a 1U case and a Xeon CPU, I was thinking about the "SUPERMICRO SYS-5017C-LF 1U Rackmount Server Barebone LGA 1155 Intel C202 DDR3 1333/1066/800" and purchase a Intel Xeon 1270v2 and a SSD for it.

Any opinions or diff setups?

Why not just go high spec dedicated? most places can do "custom" machines ie lots of ram, SSD etc also means you are not responsible for replacing failing hardware, shipping the server to the colo etc

I would agree with that. Find you a VPS (Virtual Private Server) provider, and the monthly cost you would spend on colo, you could spend on VPS and not have to worry about replacing hardware, or up front costs of the server. Just an option.

That server you listed is a nice server though. I like Supermicro, and have an older Supermicro 2U at home that's still truckin along.

You wont find a VPS that will give you anywhere close to 16GB ram (high amounts of RAM) for a reasonable price

8 core VDS and then add the extra 8gb ram for 16gb total at 219/mo.

As a note the original poster is in Norway so a EU server would be required if he wants to do game server hosting

A VPS is out of the question, srcds runs **** on virtualized environments. Anyway, can anyone propose any Supermicro builds or any other builds? 1U prefered. I am looking into dual CPU's, but I guess that won't be near my budget if I want performance out of them, the build MUST be Intel, and the E3-serie cpu's is prefered again, 8 GB ram is a must too.
