When best to upgrade to not remain "constrained"

Thread Starter
Hello,

My thread title pretty much sums up the entire thread.

My current build is I7 950
Asus-P6T-SE these X58 chipset motherboard (1366) are so damn constrained atm and the components are still "newish if you know what i mean"
I wish they would revise some x58 MBS and integrate some native Sata III and USB instead of the 3rd party versions.

My old setup was (the one I've passed to my wife)
E8500
and P5Q-E
This setup last SOOO long with no restrictions practically.
I mean this setup is still wrecking oc'd between 3,8-4ghz and runs so cold it makes me nostalgic....

I'm really thinking of moving away from those ASUS P series MBs after this experience of it getting outdated nearly instaniously.

So what do you think my best option would be?

Upgrade for example to the SAPPHIRE PURE BLACK X58 MB, and wait it out for example another 1 or 2 years?
(my watecooling kit should be arriving within one or 2 days and I can finally push this i7, only reason i bought it is beause my Artic 7 freezer pro no longer seems to be at the top and is starting to give signs of wear..)

Or is there some kind of new tech coming out this year already that might be interesting/affordable?
I've ALWAYS GONE INTEL, should I stay along that line?

Please help, I'm starting to pull my hair out here (thinking about my usb speeds and my SSD performance taking quite a hit due to the p6t-se only have sata II ports -_-)

thank you!!

No offense but... much ado about nothing.

I don't think you're going to see a real-world difference with your SSD moving from SATA II to SATA III, especially given its size. So really, nothing lost there. As for USB 3.0... what do you have a USB 3.0 media card reader or something?...

But perhaps this is important work application stuff for you. In that case looking at your motherboard you should have some open PCI / PCI-e slots. Slap one of these suckers on and away you go:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815124108

Edit: Oh you mentioned you didn't like the 3rd-party versions. Opps. Heh.

As for the future, Intel finally got better about including on-board USB 3.0 headers with the H77 & Z77 series, so its motherboards are fairly competitive now. Perhaps I don't really know what your problem is, though, as I'm reading from a gamer's perspective.

Yeah, you really don't need to upgrade yet. If you want to upgrade anything I'd say upgrade your graphics card. Sata III isn't that big of a deal. I accidentally had my SSD plugged into a sata II port and the only way I noticed a difference was because Windows rated my hard drive at 5.9.

Really you aren't missing much. I'd wait for a little while longer and keep your money for an upgrade that would make a bigger difference.

Yeah I'm not actually in the full out upgrading process, I just wanted to check around more or less whats going on.
(in the opinion of the community)

My idea for upgrading the MB is mainly because when I upgrade my main parts of my system. (CPU and MB) I pass the old ones to my wife.
and I don't want her to be slowed down for a unecessary period of time when I could have prevented it.

I don't really want to upgrade my 6850 2gb atm.
I have it overclocked to 930 and 1200.
I'm not really seeing any performance issues from that card since my monitor/tv is 1680x1050.
If I go into Eyefinity or increase my resolution then I will upgrade that card.

The only real problem I see atm is the performance of that SSD, it gets alittle choppy in loading sometimes.

Basically, that's what the 3rd-party add-ons are for. I mean the only thing a motherboard is really supposed to do is let you plug stuff in and use it. It already lets you use your RAM, GPU, CPU, & Ethernet. You just want it to be able to fully utilize SATA 3 & USB 3.0 devices. Well... she's not going to be slowed down unless she has a real use for those (and sorry, a minor increase in SSD speed doesn't really count... unless she falsely believes it does and blames you. Then you could be in trouble.)

So it sounds like you don't really have a need for SATA3 or USB 3.0 and will thus not be slowed down because you don't have a use for the abilities. But if you do, go 3rd party. It may be inelegant, but as long as the computer works... *shrug* Going in the wayback machine a friend of mine fit a long card into his computer by hacksawing a rectangle out of the side of his case so it could fit by sticking out the side. Ugly as sin, but it worked, and he didn't have to buy a new case (at that time, out of budget for him).

Well you'd probably see a benefit in purchasing a new SSD. Prices are good right now and you could pass your current one to your wife. That'll probably give her a more noticeable performance boost than upgrading her mobo/cpu.

lol I just reopened this link and realized it was a PCI-E usb port, but also SATA (i initially saw just usb)
I might pick something similar up and give it a shot.
you might have just saved me about 100€
(update the shop that i use has these priced extremely high for some reason and would end up with me just getting a new MB for the price of 2....)

It's not about the speeds I'm concerned about btw, its the actual data flow and how it seems to be bogging out on sata2 (as i was talking about in my thread about the ssd.)

She is already using this same SSD as I am. It is most likely just a quality of the drive problem more than the port speed. hm....

I'm soon going to upgrade to a vertex 4. (or M4)

Maybe our current ssds in raid will help out with the bogging out of the file transfer/load speeds.

In the end I sold off my P6T-SE and my Tagan PSU.

Picked up the Sapphire x58 pure black mobo
Coolermaster super silent 1000watt 80%+ gold modular PSU
(will arrive in about 4 days)

Corsair H80 liquid cooling system
And Aerocool Strike-X one advance case (which is really nice btw I totally recommend this for nice air flow and cable management)
(already arrived.)

need to get some lights and 2 more fans then i might post some pics

Next on the list will be the vertex 4 ssd

and a possible 7xxx series crossfire setup.

can't wait!

I think with this upgrade I'll either skip a gen on the big changes, or atleast wait for the next BIG jump.

I mean If I'm running on an I7 950 at 4,5-5ghz i should be ok for a while. thumb.gif
