try clean installing and virus scanning windows XP machines daily. Also remember you almost always have to get the drivers manually for XP.

This is a good move, although I doubt they have a large user base of SP1 users.

There aren't any real major difference between SP2 and SP3, mainly accumulated Windows updates and Group Policy stuff.

SP2 was a HUGE leap forward for XP though, it actually made it usable.

*shifty eyes*

I think we are several years away from that. It comes down to money really, if even 15% of their customers are on XP they will support it, as to drop it means up to 15% less sales. It was probably a security issue.

Nothing wrong with steam cutting off support for sp1. And there is nothing wrong with anyone still using XP. It's a great OS.

As far as gaming goes you are fooling yourself if you think something new is required in order to play the vast majority of games available today for pc.

Why do they even support XP? Pretty much every game over the last 3 years required Vista or above to run.

Over 20% of Steam users are still on some version of XP. Thats quite a lot of money, if they buy games.

The real question here is whether they will someday stop supporting Windows XP, which also raises the question for newer OSes (but that is a question that will only be answered in many, many years, as games made for Windows Vista are almost all compatible with 7 and will be with 8 and probably 9).

In case you don't know, there are a few games on Steam that have a warning box saying they are only compatible with Windows XP. If Valve one day stops supporting the OS altogether, what will it do to the customers who bought those games ? With games that don't need Steam or any other client, and those that don't need to connect to any server, you can keep playing them on a legacy machine you have or dual booting your system. If this new kind of digital distribution wants to be taken seriously by the sceptics, they have to address this problem in the future (unless they decide to keep support for Windows XP forever).

Maybe when that time comes Valve will release a patch that will let people install an offline version of Steam for Windows XP and not require any connection to their servers in order for those games that are XP only to work.
