BSOD "memory management" & Rufus Bootable USB flash drive utility?

Hey, So I have been getting BSOD's that say the error is "memory management" I don't really have any idea but I have gotten some advise on what to do about it. I was told this:
Quote:
Download something called "memtest 86+ (link)
Burn it to a CD, or create a bootable USB drive out of the ISO, then boot into it. Let it run a couple of hours (preferably 6+), then check if there are any errors.

Now I have never created a bootable ISO off of a flash drive before so I was looking around here for a tutorial/guide on how to do it and I foundthis guide. Now in that guide it says to download the GRUB installer.

I looked into the GRUB installer a little bit and came up with a few problems. First off I read some reviews that were a little worrisome. I also ran into a problem when I did install the program from the link in the guide. The folder that the OP was talking about that was suppose to be there after I extracted everything wasn't even there.
Quote:
Within the grubinst folder it generates open the grubinst_gui.exe application. From here select Disk and then the proper disk for your USB drive.

Since there were problems with that I just decided to try and find my own program that would make it possible to boot off of a USB flash drive. I found Rufus, and never heard of it, but it seems to do exactly what I want it to do. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this program or knows of a better one that I should use? And also if booting off of a USB flash drive and running Memtest 86+ will even help my BSOD's that say the error is "memory management"?

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. I have been getting these BSOD's more recently and much for frequently. I really don't know what I should do. Help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!

None of this is really necessary as Memtest86+ comes with an already premade USB key installed that does all of the work for you.

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Also, Memory Management can be related to anything, in fact it really shows no proof whatsoever that your BSODs are actually RAM related, it can be 3rd party.

With this being said:

Please navigate to C:/Windows/Minidump and zip up any dump files located there that you'd like to have analyzed, and then attach that zip here. If there are no dumps located in C:/Windows/Minump, you may be writing full memory dumps to C:/Windows, and it'll be called MEMORY.DMP.

If there are no dumps in either of those locations, but you know you have a page file set up, any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUp Utilities, CCleaner, etc, will delete this upon use.

If you cannot get into normal mode, please do this via Safe Mode.

Here are the files from C:/Windows/Minidump, I read that the "memory management" error could be from anything really. Which doesn't make me happy madsmiley.png.... But anyways thanks for taking a loot at these, lemme know what you think.

Alright, there we go. Now that I have seen the dumps, there's mention of memory corruption, which IS an indicator that memory may be a problem here. HOWEVER, it is also an indicator of a possible 3rd party driver causing the issue.

I'd recommend running the Memtest first to see if memory is or isn't the issue. If it comes back negative with no errors after at LEAST ~7 hours of testing, we'll enable Driver Verifier which I will explain when and if necessary.

After checking the loaded modules list, wdcsam64.sys (Western Digital SCSI Arcitecture Model (SAM) WDM driver) is dated from 2008. Update it here if an update is available.

So I should run this memtest? and also do I have to do the boot from a USB flash drive to do that? I will make sure to run is for over 7 hours or so once you lemme know exactly how I should do it.

Also if I do have to run the memtest from the bootable USB flashdrive I have never done that before so I will probably have to have you explain it to me and tell me what programs I should get for it rolleyes.gif. Sorry I am a bit of a pain, but I feel like everytime I try to do something on my own I completely screw everything up. Thats why I like having precise directions to follow, at least when it comes to thing I am doing for a first time.

also Thanks a lot for helping me out I appreciate it a lot more then you know. Its people like you that make this place awesome. biggrin.gif

so yeah just lemme know about the memtest and if I need to run it from a bootable USB flash drive. Also if that memtest is the one that you recommend.

It's no problem, I understand as I am a person of perfection myself when it comes to people giving me instructions.

1. If you want to put Memtest86+ on a USB drive, click this.

2. After you've downloaded that, extract it and run the EXE. Essentially what it will do is detect your USB drive and automatically make it bootable and put all of the necessary Memtest86+ files onto it, you don't have to worry about doing anything.

3. Once you've done this and the install is finished, go ahead and boot from the USB drive. You can do this from the BIOS.

4. That's it, just let the test run for at least 7 passes, no less is my recommendation. If there are any errors, even one, that's an indication that memory is the issue.

Alright I have it on the USB flash drive and all I have to do is make sure I can boot from it. Once I boot from the USB will the memtest automatically run? or do I have to do something to make it start?

I will run it tonight when I am at school as I am there for 8 hours. Once I get back I just look to see if there is an error and if there is then that means it is a memory issue? do I have to save anything and send it to you? or does the memtest just detect issues and then you have to figure it out?

Alright so I just booted into the USB flash drive just to make sure it worked and I got the memtest86+ to run and RIGHT when the program started a error showed up on the bottom of the memtest that was highlighted in red. Also I only ran it for 1:21 seconds and it said that there were 21 errors. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am pretty sure that the BSOD's are from the memory... I am going to still run it for the 8 hours that I am in school tonight, but I just wanted to let you know what was up and see what your thoughts on it are.

Thanks

Really? I need to buy new RAM? And it is for sure the RAM? There is no question about it? I am going to be home around 10 o'clock tonight so I should see how many errors there are, but I know there are going to be a lot because before I left for school memtest was running for just over 15 minutes and there were around 70 errors if I recall..

anyways, if RAM is what I need to replace can you maybe suggest what I should get?
