Memtest stresses memory only, nothing operating system related. The only other theoretical causes of errors in Memtest are: incorrect DRAM timings and voltages, incorrect DIMM installation (RAM is in the wrong slots), stuff like that.
As far as what memory to get goes, I don't personally know, that's something to ask in the memory forums. Just make sure whatever RAM you do invest in is compatible with your current board.
