thinking of going Intel....

Thread Starter
So title says it all. i have my bday coming up in August and was thinking of going over to Intel. Would be used for gaming, would be oc'ed. The i5 2500k seems to be the most popular, I need recommendations on cpu and mobo. My budget will be within $500. BTW it also MUST do SLI well, I would like at least 2 slots @x16

Ooo. If things haven't changed much since I've been gone, then the i5-2500K and the ASUS P8P67 Pro is a beautiful combination.

I was thinking the 2500k unless someone can give me a good reason for an i7

That particular mobo seems to be deactivated/out of stock on the egg.

And do I want sandy or Ivy?

Oh wow. It seems most of the P8P67 boards are gone. It also seems difficult to find them at other stores too (at ones I know that I can trust).

Maybe Ivy is a better way to go because of this. I'm not sure.

Well, there isn't anything wrong with going with Sandy Bridge is you want the maximum overclock. At this point in the game though, I would look at a Z77 motherboard.
Z77 boards should be compatible with the 2500k. Check the CPU support list to make sure.

Yea, at this point they are mostly phasing out P67. If you want a sandy mobo, get Z68. It's the upgrade to P67, can OC both CPU and GPU and has SSD caching. Sandy or Ivy, you can go both ways. Sandy is easier to OC since it's easier to hit the temp ceiling on ivy. But if you compare both of them at max OC for the chip, you end up with similar performance. SO I think just get the cheaper chip that is available and get a Z77 mobo.

You're not going to get dual 16x lanes on LGA 1155. You need LGA 2011 for that.

Trust me, there's little to no difference at all running dual PCIe 3.0 @ 8x.

Get a ASRock Z77 Extreme4 or Extreme6 (only difference being a 3rd PCIe 16x slot that's 4x electrical and can't be used for SLI / Crossfire)....and then get an i5 3570k processor. No reason to gimp your entire build by going Sandy Bridge at this point. For RAM (if you need it), go for the 2x4GB Samsung 30nm DDR3-1600's. They overclock like a dream. wheee.gif

false you can get dual x16 lanes on 1155 but it comes with a nice price tag

Look up NVIDIA NF200 It was added on some boards to increase Pci express lanes/ bandwith
