Concerning AMD 955 BE and 960T

Thread Starter
So I have the option to swap my Phenom II x4 955 BE with a 960T. My 955 is c3 and from what I've read the 960T is E0. First what is the difference between the two steps? Is one better or about the same?

Also should I just keep the 955 BE or try out the 960T and go for unlocking all 6 cores? The 955 I can only get stable around 3.4GHz at any higher it gives me memory problems. Is the 960T anymore promising OC wise?
sounds like you have a terribly binned 955, even a poorly binned 960t is likely to overclock much better than that, and also have a better IMC. Definitely worth the swap depending on the price

Go for it. It's not at all unusual for a 960T to hit 4 GHz or more.

The stepping difference in this case isn't nearly as significant as the fact that you're switching from a Deneb core to a Thuban. The Denebs were designed from the ground-up as a consumer chip, while the Thubans are actually one of AMD's six-core Opteron designs adapted to the AM3 socket. Functionally, they're the same, but the Thuban versions are a more refined version of the architecture and typically can scale to higher clock speeds.

Clock speeds the same I doubt you'd see noticeable difference. Perhaps maybe in some benchmarks but a 3.2 Deneb vs a 3.2 Thuban (quad) or 4Ghz Deneb versus 4Ghz Thuban (quad) should perform almost identically.

Better reasons to switch would be:

* Possibility of unlocking the Thuban Quad to a Hexa
* Better IMC for higher frequency RAM
* Lower voltage on average (still chip dependent)

Otherwise - you won't really gain any performance.

Definitely.. ph-E0 Thuban is a good 2 notches better than a 955/965 Deneb biggrin.gif
My latest Thuban was doing 4.4 stable..and cool...like .. 22c on the cores with load..ymmv.
never got that out of a Deneb

Ok great. Thanks for the info. Hopefully the 960T will OC better then.

I did read someone saying if you OC to leave the two unlockable cores alone as they will not be very stable overclocking. That if you want to unlock the additional cores no or minimal OC is best. Anyone have any info on this or experience?

Go for the 960T, it's so easy to get 4GHz out of one.

You've also got all the advantages that were listed above, which can be very useful.

I've yet to break 40c on my kuhler, even with 4GHz and 6 cores, but my ambient temps are really cool.

Hyper 212 plus should handle 6 cores at 4 GHz pretty nicely.
