Need Some Sharepoint Help

Thread Starter
I've been given the task of converting our company's intranet hub into a sharepoint site. Building it from the ground up, so to speak.

After spending a few hours, I've come to a conclusion - sharepoint is ONLY good for sharing documents.

Our current setup has a "home" page, where there are blog postings about stuff happening within the company.

The part I'm having trouble the most with, is creating the content ...

On the left side, there is a navigation bar and it contains links to other information (time off requests, etc).

I have a few questions
1) How would I create a site with just a blog
2) I created a "blog" in sharepoint and that's about all it can do. I need to get the left side navigation up
3) Does sharepoint only do MS Office documents?

Thanks!

I can answer #3

It depends on what version of sharepoint you are using, the company where I worked (summer job, I am a student, but sharepoint was my only job there thumb.gif), If you are using SP (SharePoint) 2010, then you can have PDF documents in there (with document text search) but otherwise SP is only MS Documents.

If you want to search for documents, only SP 2010 will allow within document text search for MS Docs and PDFs, but lower editions require plugins that have to be installed on server and a bunch of other crap (honestly, I wouldn't bother with those plugins, they are crap).

Anyway, that last part was my little rant biggrin.gif have fun with SP and I hoped I helped.

I am a SP admin and develop daily on SP sites. I will try and help you the best I can.

1) How would I create a site with just a blog
Create a site using a blog template ... it should be fairly straight forward.
2) I created a "blog" in sharepoint and that's about all it can do. I need to get the left side navigation up
A blog is only a small portion of what it can do. What are you trying to achieve with the left navigation?
Under site actions >> site settings >> Navigation
you should get all you need in there.
3) Does sharepoint only do MS Office documents?
No, SP does any document you want.
What do you want to upload? You will need to make sure the file type is not in the blocked list. and then you will need to add a new icon for it in the hive.

please let us know what SP version you are using. And what permissions you have.

Are you using the built in SQL or are you connecting to a dedicated MS SQL box?

Sorry for the late response. Got pretty busy and this project kind of fell on the back burner for a few days.

I'm still having issues creating a "home" page with a blog feed and then a navigation bar on the left that links to static pages that are also hosted on sharepoint.

We're running the basic edition at the moment, i suspect that's why I'm having some issues.
