2GB VRAM with heavily modded Skyrim: Has anybody had issues? - Page 6

I've got an OCed GTX 670. I'm running with ugrids set to 7, performance ambient occlusion and 2* supersampling. The only texture mods installed are the ones from STEP 2.1.1b. I'm also running a FXAA post process injector mod. Without VSync, I experience huge tearing. With adaptive VSync, I've got no tearing but as soon as I drop to 35-40 FPS the game feels very laggy. DO you know of a driver that could fix this issue or have you got any tips to help me out? THanks smile.gif

At 2560x1600, 4x AA, 2x Transparency AA, 8x AF via nVidia CP, all the .ini tweaks except for uGrids, and the highest possible resolution textures from the STEP guide, I'm capped at 2GB VRAM and I experience some stuttering... especially in Whiterun using the Beautiful Whiterun mod. I'm using 3 GTX680s and a 4.8ghz 3930k, so the game never dips below 60 fps if it's not stuttering. Kinda wish I had waited on the 4gb version of the card before purchasing, but then again I'd still be waiting since there are no 4gb waterblocks as of yet.

If I use the Optimizer Textures program and reduce texture sizes to 1024 max, my VRAM tops out at about 1.6gb and completely eliminates stutter, but the game looks noticeably worse.

I'm pretty sure I could cap out the VRAM even at 4gb. An 8gb card would be pretty nice. If only VRAM were additive in SLI configurations...

Can add me to this list. I've decided to sell my 2GB 670 and go for a 4GB card now. I'm pretty much 1.9-2GB the entire time I'm playing and get stuttering alot, sometimes results in CTD. If I turn down FXAA, issues go away and never hit vram limit, close but no stuttering yet. No AA looks terrible though.

I laugh at all the people in reviews saying it's a waste of money and just a marketing scheme to have more than 2GB and that cards will never utilize it...please come over to my house and watch this happen instead of repeating what someone else said on the internet lol.

Figured I 'd add to this thread as I feel I can support other posts. I have a 690gtx (2gb vram effective) and am currently running in surround. In most games I can stay under the vram limit by changing only the AA settings, not off completely but not maxed either. In skyrim however( I'm running over 40 mods including all the high res texture packs), at 5760 x 1080 no matter what settings I adjust I hit the max 2024mb vram limit and experience stutter and missing textures (verifying that I have run out of vram). When not in surround vram usage (monitored with precision) hits 1980mb max. So in reply to the threads title, yes a heavily modded skyrim will almost hit the 2gb vram usage. Now I never did hit the 2gb limit but I certainly came close. So for those of you that do not use surround you should be safe, for now, with just using a 2gb card, more couldn't hurt but it doesn't seem to be required, yet. For those of us that want to play our games in surround I would strongly suggest 2 680 4gb vram editions in sli or the ATI equivalant.

EDIT: I should also add that if you are experiencing vram issues try disabling all the flashy stuff in windows like aero if it applies to your OS, as this will save you about 200- 300mb of vram.

Hey wasup, I´m currently building a pc with a lot of thought on modded skyrim and since there is already a thread about it I´ll post here:D
From what I've read here its possible to hit the limit on a 2gb vRam card, NOW I was considering getting either 660 ti sli or 670 sli so that means I´ll have more horsepower but still 2gb vRam....and I wanted to run skyrim like this guy here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztzf2_K_5cM&list=UUoMLKn2Xvi0C1x2hC5_Cssw&index=7

This guy has a gtx 680 OC and get's about 45 fps at 1080p, donno if hitting vRam limit or not. So my question is, should I go for sli 2gb or sli 3gb/4gb? would 660 ti sli be enough for 60 fps? anyone with sli notice any micro-stuttering?

I have approximately the same graphics with a GTX 670@ 1370 MHz and a 3570K @ 4.4 GHz, I run at 60 FPS but outdoors there are some annoying frame drops at some point so I would recommend getting 4gb cards or SLI 7970s.

Only problem suggesting AMD cards is Skyrim is one of those games that really takes advantage of FXAA and Ambient Occlusion. My vote would be if you are planning on getting your Skyrim mods to mimic those in that video you will have a better chance with Nvidia cards. You WILL be using ENB and from what I've read it works better with Nvidia as well.

And that's why I only mentioned nvidia cards in my question:p but just to let you know, I'm going for 660 ti 3gb sli.

I know they are using 2560x1600, but it still demonstrates an area where 4GB helps. I knew mods increase vram usage, so I wanted to see if someone had experienced this at a lower resolution.

Not to mention 4GB GTX 670's/680's are bottlenecked by the memory bandwidth.
