Being bottlenecked really is not an issue that matters in this scenario. True, having 4gb of vram will not make the card any faster. However the real big difference is when you hit the vram limit on your 2gb card the game with stutter horribly and eventually crash to the desktop. This will not happen on a 4gb card, been there done that and a 4gb model fixed my issue.

Interesting, would be nice to measure what's the max usage of those 4GBs in games...

Most games don't use over 1.5gb in my experience. A lot of the games I play don't even get near 1gb even. A heavily modded Skyrim does use about 2-2.4gb for me. Haven't checked Crysis 3 or Tomb Raider but I know a modded Crysis and Crysis 2 both used about 1.6-1.8.

Personally the minor price difference between the 3gb and 2gb card was worth spending it, just in case.

Mind you this was without PrecisionX running so the temps were a bit higher than normal but there is an example of my vram usage with Skyrim.

And this was also at 1920x1080.

Games are adaptive. I would like to see the exact same settings and mods as above on a 2gig card and see what the fps and mem usage is.

I didnt change any mods or settings from the 2gb card to the 4gb card. With the 2gb card the vram was pegged and fps went down to about 13 until it starting looking like a slideshow and then crashed to desktop. This happened several times to me before I decided to switch to a 4gb card, no more issues since.

I I am getting a asus gtx 680 directcu ii top, it is a 2gb card and I am wondering if I get mods that aren't graphical mods if I will max out my VRAM, plz reply ASAP because I am not sure if I should get the 4gb version with lower clock speeds and performance.

The vram issues are caused by mods that have high resolution textures and viewing distance settings that are set way high. If you are not planning to do these you should be ok. However, I highly suggest that since the new 700 series cards are out and AMD looks to be announcing new cards at E3 you should hang tight and possibly invest in a card that will let you play the new gen games at the end of the year without being worried about vram.

To correct my earlier post : the best card for a modded Skyrim right now would of course be a Titan/780, but in 300/400$ categroy it would be a 770 and not a 7970 because Catalyst drivers are not as good as Nvidia drivers when it comes to Skyrim. I tried out Skyrim with a 7970 and a 670 (2GB), the 7970 didn't have as much hiccups when loading new objects but overall the framerate was lower and it stuttered a bit more. Other than that, for every other game, I don't regret turning in my 670 for a 7970.
