pump running REALLY fast

Thread Starter
I've building a loop with really low restriction, a CPU block, 1x 120mm radiator, and the DDC1T with a Phobya top with maybe 45cm of tubing in it. Its a SG05 build. It is isolated, and is not resonating vibration. Whenever I run it, it sounds like the pump is working REALLY hard. I've used DDC's in other builds and never had one sound like this. It sounds like flooring a car in 1st and not shifting, It sounds really bad. Is it because there is not enough restriction? What is it and how can I fix it?

When making posts like this try and tell us what components you are using, all I can tell is you are using HF with dual 655`s. Are they variable speed version, why do you need 2, are they in series, what kind of rads and how many, what size tubing, do the pumps rest on isolation pads. These are things we have to know so we can better help you ! Forgot to ask, where is res and do you have system properly bled of all air, send a picture or two. redface.gif

My apologies, the loop consists of the one Laing DDC1T with a Phobya Nickel Top, one Swiftech MCR120-XP, and a Swiftech Apogee XT rev 1. it's not my "sig rig" it is a build in progress. i have bled all the air out, and really dont know what else to do.

I can see you are having fun trying to cram everything into such a small space, first off is their anyway to move pump away from rad support because it blocks rad airflow from an already small radiator. Next is there a chance you could unbolt the pump leaving all connections intact and just hold the pump in your hand while system is turned on. That way you will see if rad support and pump have some sort of resonance together. It`s 2 in the morning here, I`ll catch up with you later today. If you can show a picture with the psu installed we will try to find good spot for pump and res.thumb.gifsleepysmiley03.gif

I tried holding the pump away from the radiator and it didn't work frown.gif I really can't think of anywhere else to mount the pump. I will post a couple picks of mockups of different layouts later tonight.

How close is the RES to the pump inlet?

From the build blog, it looks like the loop is using 1/2-inch (12.7mm) ID tubing size. But then again, the footprint of that case can make the tubing size look gigantic.

You can place a resistor or a fan controller to tame the power to the pump (even a 9VDC@ 800mA to 1.5A wall-wart to evaluate). Turn the pump voltage down to about 9VDC. The noise should drop considerably. The larger flow to the pump inlet allows the noise to increase since the impeller isn't starving anymore. Sort of like taking the exhaust system off of a V8 for better flow for the engine Hp.

You could be correct, Cavitation will cause impeller to speed up because air molecules created by lack of water supply to Inlet, lower speed with controller will help a lot and make sure res is not below the pump. These pumps do not do not create enough vacuum on inlet side to draw water upwards if the res is below pump. thumb.gif

In all my testing the res was always about 10cm before the pump, but always above it. I hooked up the pump to a fan controller I had sitting around, and it solved the issue. Thank you very much, I think I'm going to get one of those PCI slot fan controllers. Repped.

Yes, the PCI fan controllers are simle and easy to use. My pump is running off of a VapoChill Micro PCI fan speed controler single knob setup.

Enjoy!
