Just ordered first mech keyboard!-- Couple questions

Quickfire Rapid w/Reds.
Going from a rubber dome Razer Anansi.

I ordered it for like $100 shipped and then a $7 shipped USB keypad/numpad on TigerDirect for when I need to crunch numbers, I can just take it out and put it to the left of my keyboard or right of my mousepad.

I bit the bullet and despite being a poor high school student figured the amount of time I spend on my PC is worth the investment.

Should I order some o-rings for it too? I want it to be as quiet as possible and being as I have Red linear switches a lower travel distance wouldn't hurt, I don't need my linear switch to go all the way down.

Where can I get some quality o-rings for a mech keyboard? The ones on WASD Keyboards are so expensive. Like $26 shipped with the key remover, kind of ridiculous.

Anyway did I make the right choice buying this mechanical? I've been doing tons of research and it seems like the best fit for me. Besides I have a USB numpad ordered for if and when I ever would need one.

I'm so excited! I hope it's better than my Razer Anansi, despite having no backlighting and losing the macro functionality: I didn't ever really use it anyway to be honest.

**The biggest thing I'm worried about with such an expensive keyboard is my oils and what-not from my fingers accumulating on the keys. It does that now on my current keyboard but I usually wipe it off every couple days with a very damp cloth or a tiny amount of rubbing alcohol or something. Can I still do this with the mech keyboard? What's the best way to keep the keys clean from the buildup, and stay as new as possible?

As far as the orings go, to have the most quiet and comfortable feel install some orings.

Here is a good write up with various sizes http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:25612

You should be able to find them at a local hardware store for pennies each. Above link also has sources for said orings for cheap.

As far as cleaning goes you could wipe every few days with a damp cloth it wont hurt. Me I shoot a little glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth every few months or so as needed to keep mine fresh.

Enjoy!

Thanks man!

Do they have the 40A orings at local hardware stores though?

What would be the difference in performance between 40A and 50A? I read that thread you linked, and everything I've read tells me that 50A is harder but what does that do in terms of sound reduction?

I dont think you would notice any dfference in sound between the two. Just a slight difference in feel is all. I doubt a hardware store is gonna have the 40A...... looks like the only place to buy those is WASD.

You can get the 50A for 9 bucks on amazon http://www.amazon.com/008-Buna-N-O-Ring-Durometer-Round/dp/B0051XWXCE/ref=pd_sbs_indust_1/180-6341793-9341041

or buy the ones from WASD for 20

I would not bother with o-rings. Try the board out first without them. I personally don't like them, and especially on MX reds.

As far as cleaning the keys, do whatever you normally do. Replacement keys are readily available from numerous sources for cherry mx switches. You can find sets brand new off of people's Filco's or Storms for as low as $15 shipped (they buy them then put more expensive caps on). Or you can delve into the more expensive sets and customization yourself.

The CM Storm is a great board, and I'm sure you will be happy.

That keyboard is great! I personally have the same one with cherry reds thumb.gif

It comes with a free key remover so you can pull the keys out once in a while if you have to. You know, just to give it a thorough cleaning or replace it.

If you can't get used to not having a wrist rest, then I guess you have to get one of those as well. Because this one doesn't come with a wrist rest and IMO, the keyboard is somewhat taller compared to most membrane keyboards.

Thanks all for the replies! I did end up ordering some o-rings from WASD that I'm going to try out, and if they don't work it isn't the end of the world. Uh I can't wait to have a mech keyboard after all this time and how often I use my PC.

Oh one other thing, is the plastic keycap remover that comes with the keyboard fine or do I need to get one of those wire ones for big keys like the spacebar? (How do you even remove the spacebar?) Thanks in advance.
