Odd HD Tune Results....WD Black 750GB

Thread Starter
Right now my PC is running off of the new Samsung 830 SSD I installed. So I decided to run HD tune tests on all my drives.

The Wester Digital Black was dissappointing. Does this have something to do with it being 75% full and split into 2 partitions

New Samsung 830 (I was still using PC during test) But also seems lsow in comparison to other tests I have seen

Looks perfectly fine to me. 750GB Blacks are old. They're slower than 640GB/1TB/2TB Blacks, but faster than 500GB Blacks. It still has good access times. As an OS drive, it'd still probably be the better choice over a drive with 20ms access times. But now that you have an SSD... relegate it to personal storage and older games? WD Blacks are generally quite reliable; mine currently has most of my projects/pictures and stuff stored on it.

Impressive sequential speeds. thumb.gif

Bad access times, though. Still, it might not matter much for games or other storage.

HDTune isn't the best benchmark for SSDs. The RandomAccess test is more useful, or other benchmarks like CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD.

Oh ok, I honestly thought that 750gb Black was supposed to be faster then that. I have older harddrives that are faster. I was disappointed in teh results.

That Seagate drive is actually USB 3.0, which might have something to do with the access times. I honestly thought there was something wrong with it because I was only getting 60-80mb/s transfer speeds, but now I know why, that 750gb WD black was the slow drive. Now I get around 200mb/s through USB 3.0:D

As for my SSD, I've seen HD tune tests for my exact SSD that have an average near 490-500MB/s

The 7501AALS uses 3x250GB platters, which is why it's so slow compared to more modern drives. That Seagate external uses 1TB platters, and most 7200RPM/5400RPM drives now use at least 500-750GB platters.

I wondered if WD would ever update their 500/640/750GB drives to single-platter designs, but they don't seem to have. Still, reliability is on their side, so there might be something to it - sticking with the same design.

Perhaps you need to fiddle with the block sizes in the settings?

Were those benchmarks run on empty drives? Empty drives bench faster, since the controller can return zeros rather than actually bothering to read the NAND.
