[PA] Cliffy B. Talks Difficulty And Linearity In Games

Quote:
Epic’s Game Design Director Cliff Blezinski recently sat down with Xbox360Achievements.org to discuss how he believes this generation of games has become far to linear and easy. Cliff talked at length about how catering to a broader audience has removed the need for a player to bring anything to the table. We echo Cliff’s concerns as he poses the question “when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you?”

I agree with everything he said, i was thinking of the difficulty system developers could use. Make the casual or easy difficulty really easy, but hard and extreme or w/e it would be called, should be really hard. I am getting bored of games just because there is no challenge anymore. Just my 2cents.gif

Silent hill 1 - piano puzzle, MGS 1 - extreme mode, RE1 - 3 hour challange, RE2 - S rank those r from top of my head as it imprinted me for life as I spent weeks obtaining it. Most recent was diablo 3 inferno act 3, then patch 1.0.3 came out... SMH...

I think we need to revamp "difficulty" settings. Because now, especially with RTS games, raising the difficulty doesn't actually make the AI smarter. It just allows them to cheat more.

For example, on Easy difficulty, their units are pathetically weak and they send them piecemail, if at all. On normal, they make reasonably intelligent moves and use a decent amount of units.

But when you put it on hard, they don't get any smarter. They just produce units at such a rate that you cannot possibly over come them. In short, they just get to cheat more. I'd like an AI that fights fair, but fights smart.

I agree with the linearity argument he's making. I love games where the outcome isn't designed into the story from the beginning, and they aren't forcing you to go from A to B, or to do the next objective and there only being one way to do it. This is the main reason I like games like Minecraft and Terraria, they have huge open worlds and you can go anywhere you want and do whatever you need to survive and become stronger. Certain games like the Elder Scrolls series do this acceptably well, you can just do anything, but you can mostly choose where you want to go, who you want to kill, if you want to be good or evil, etc.

Company of Heroes 2 is gloating about using the Skirmish AI as the base component for both dedicated Skirmish and the Campaign. They are investing in the AI "Smartness" a lot, so it should be extremely interesting, as not even the campaign will play out the same way, making it very dynamic and should be considerably more challenging.
Currently a lot of the abilities are not even used by the AI for CoH, this is expected to change for CoH 2 smile.gif

As for console games... too much "help" in games.

This mostly stands for Western Games, ever play any Eastern titles or mods?
Check out Mysery mod for Stalker Call of Pripyat - very hard, no holding your hand at all here.
Of course there are extremes to diffiulty where it stops being fun, and becomes tedious - looking at you Stalker Soup!!!! tongue.gif

I just started playing Uncharted 2 last week and put the game on Very Hard. In the first 10 minutes I was pissed at how stupid the AI was, I was crouched behind a box and a guard came up and was standing right next to me...but because I was "hidden" with me being behind a box he couldn't see me. I see him turn his head and stare at me, nothing. I had to sneak around an area full of guards and I remember standing straight up maybe 10 feet away and in front of one of the guards, no reaction, seriously how short of a viewing range did they give these stupid guards. Played through an event fire fight later on, I threw the newly acquired grenades around them and they were practically running to be on top of them. Game was so frustratingly easy I just turned it off. Games are far too easy these days even at "the hardest difficulties" and then you have D3 which just tries to do the stupid sense of a "hard game" with just making an elite 1-2 shot you in Inferno. Developers don't understand what difficulty is anymore.

The problem is the average person sucks at video games comparatively. Even people on here say games like HL2: Ep. 2 take 6 hours to beat, which is about as slow as you can possible go.

Well, not everyone's aim is to "finish the game quickly", we must remember. Some people like to spend hours exploring every part of a map before going to the next objective. (i tend to do that a lot. For most games, I either fool around looking for fights or if i'm feeling kind, I just explore the map and only kill anything that interferes with my exploration ..) unless it is a boring game, then I just want to finish it as fast and painlessly as possible...

/
Well, that's why D3 tried to give us inferno (I do agree that the one-shot kills are annoying, but I does force you to change your game play and not just easily mow down anything in your path.
And I must also appreciate the little intelligence present in some enemies... like jailers that will cage you and next thing you know, a desecrater/molten equipped thinks it will be fun to put a pool at your feet while jailed. Such events changed my playstyle a lot since playing through "Normal".

Anyway, I do agree with the above posts that what is really needed is increase in the AI of enemies (one of the things I liked about the hitman series in the early days though there were still some bugs. If the guard saw you go hide behind a box, he'll come there ... with company ... ).
It is more fun with smarter AI (and also harder).
