[Escapist] John Carmack "Not Excited" by Next-Gen Consoles - Page 3

Sometimes I get the feeling Carmack is a bit disconnected from gaming reality. He was very excited about IDtech 5 but it seems he was more interested in getting it to run properly on an iphone than on pc. Now he wants us to wear bulky equipment on our heads. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new tech, but it needs to be properly implemented. Don't just bring out new tech for the sake of bringing out new tech.

He actually brought it up himself. I cant find the interview, but he did go into some great detail on his current work with the goggles. It's still at a hobby stage and isnt an active project for him yet.

Found the interview.

I will wait for DOOM 4 to reserve final judgement on idTech 5.

I think he's right on Virtual Reality, not because he's been working on it though.

Here's why:

When graphics get to the point where the difference between movies, real life, and games is near impossible to tell - the next step beyond that is obviously putting yourself into that world (virtual reality). You can play all the 2D and even 3D games you want that allow you to do all sorts of things but it will never seem real, until it becomes possible to make the dream states a virtual world for people to play in. Moral objectives aside in this kind of scenario (many sci-fi movies about it.. - The 13th Flloor is a decent one), this is the future - where you can at the very least see and enact movement in that world, with the next steps including the rest of the senses.

That really is the future. I couldn't tell you how far away, how long, or any of that - but it is the future. 2D and 3D will be relegated to other kinds of games once you're in a true virtual reality.

Imagine playing Skyrim as your own character, but being able to see and interact with the world around you - even without smell and taste - touching, seeing and hearing will go a long way to making it excitingly more fun.

When you put it like that, it sounds like something the porn industry will be pushing long before the gaming industry does.

I guess you could say that but think of the possibilities in a VR world:

Sim City (being able to walk your own city)
GTA IV (need I say more on this one? tongue.gif)
Sports Games
Flight Sim

And on... and on.... tongue.gif

Sure, I imagine it could be pretty awesome if implemented right, but I see two problems here: 1) unless it comes in a package comparable (in size) to 3d glasses, it's going to be too bulky and uncomfortable, and 2) I wonder how much strain constant exaggerated head movements will put on your neck.
For this technology to be viable, you need to be able to use it for hours on end without physical discomfort, otherwise most gamers will just stick to their monitors/TV's. This is not even taking into account all other motions required for "true" VR, which will have the same problems as kinect/wii motion controls, if not worse. Most people play games to relax, not to get a workout.

I used to run the Virtual Reality labs at SGI. The biggest issue we had was with VR sickness. Everyone gets it to some degree and a large number of people get physically sick. It is the conflict between the brains interpretation of movement and the inner ear denying that movement. There are other factors but that is the main one.

I still have my HMD and Pinch gloves.

Oh don't get me wrong - I'm sure there are hurdles and obstacles. I'm only pointing out why I think it is the future. I think VR gaming in interactive environments will be the next best thing past 2D/3D gaming, no matter what the timeline may be, and no matter how it's implemented. biggrin.gif

It could be a 'holodeck' or a version of VR glasses like in Caprica.... whatever it comes out to be. thumb.gif

I just personally think that's the next step beyond the screen.

It still all comes back to the question of what gaming is supposed to be. Where is this Wii-mote, Kinect, and even VR going to take us? Are we all going to need to be highly skilled Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu masters to play a sword fighting game? It used to be all I cared about in life, but I haven't touched a sword in about five years. I will enjoy a sword fighting game yet, but I don't have a lot of desire to go back to spending several hours a day with a boken.

With virtual reality there will sill be some semblance of reality that creeps in. You can display the environment around me, fine...but can you also give me the skills needed to play the game? The various methods of user input level this playing field and make it so any one can play them. I've only been around a Wii a couple of times and I can't think of one good thing to say about it. I can only imagine what I would have to say about a Kinect.

I have a feeling they will just use brain implants and simulate the impulses to your brain.
