Hey all, I am going to college in the fall and will be buying a notebook for all of my classes. However, I am also entertaining the idea of upgrading and bringing my desktop with me as well (for gaming purposes). Right now I have an i7 930, which is still chugging along nicely, do you think I should upgrade to 2011 now or wait until the next socket arrives? As for the graphics, should I get something newer, wait for the next nvidia iteration, or simply add another 480 in sli?
If I take the route of not upgrading my cpu, mobo, and psu, I was thinking of simply augmenting my computer by adding another 480, swapping out my 6gb 1333 ocz ram for 12gb 1600 or higher, adding a much larger and faster ssd, and most importantly buying a 120hz display (or a korean monitor ips monitor).

What do you guys think?

Haswell man, refined 22nm chips are gonna be amazing. Or wait even more for the 14(?)nm chips.

Unless you actually need more power, I don't see the point in upgrading your i7 and that GTX 480 is still one of the best GPUs around. I'd wait for Haswell and the GTX 7xx/HD 8xxx. Then, you make a big upgrade! smile.gif

Does it do what you want it to do today? If you can play the games you want to play, don't upgrade for no reason. If you wanted to add a 2nd 480, itll add heat and power, but since you dont pay for power at college, that wouldnt be a bad upgrade. The only thing I would do to your rig if your gaming experience is fine today is the SSD. 128GB SSDs are fairly cheap and offer more space so you dont have to be as cautious with what you put onto it. I wouldn't worry about the RAM either unless you plan to do something like Virtual Machines that require more. The 120HZ monitor may require more GPU. Now that I think about it, I would consider selling your 480 and getting one high end GPU like a 7970. It should take care of most games on a single monitor and not make your dorm like a furnace.

I found some catleaps overclockeable to 124hz on ebay; I may end up going that route. a 120hz IPS sounds nice!
