[IGN] EA's Peter Moore: Free-to-Play is an "Inevitability" - Page 4

EA is just the worst company. These guys don't believe Free 2 Play is the big wave of the future that every game is going to use.

No, they are just planning to switch their failing MMO to the F2P model and b/c EA is EA they are compelled to pretend they are doing this because they believe it is the "New paradigm in gaming" etc., blah blah blah.

This is standard operating procedure for EA. Remember when David DeMartini said Steam "cheapens intellectual property" with their Steam sales? Well that was b/c EA wasn't doing them on Origin as not to upset their retail partners. Then a few weeks later they offered some Steam like sales!

These guys are some of the biggest hypocrites and liars in the industry, at least in my book. If the industry does suffer some sort of second crash like the '82 crash I hope EA is one of the companies that goes under and makes room for more innovative companies with more respect for their customers.

EDIT: Does it feel like EA is just chasing revenue in areas other people have pioneered?

EA is running a video game monopoly. They better not assume total control of the gaming market and try to implement this idea of "F2P" on every other gaming company (that is yet to be acquired by EA). I'd rather go with the demo to full game model instead of the F2P with micro-transaction model. Origin is such a nuisance that I have to install this program in order to play EA games. I wish I could only use steam for online game distribution. I should boycott their games or something.

I gave this a thought the other day.

Spend £30 on a game.... May sell about half a million copies within the year

Launch a F2P game.... Gets over 1mill players in the first 2 months with a gradually growing player base still, Then think about these Chance packs they put up like in blacklight. A possible chance of getting something and about £1 each, More than 50k players have spent over £100 to get a permanent item (some win some lose) But then theres also things like different skins for there character, £7.50 for a player skin, Then another £7.50 for a gun skin, Maybe you want 2 more or 3? It all stacks up

And this is why free to play games are turning such a profit. Plus, I personally know people who started a free to play game, bought about $150 worth of stuff in the first month and then stopped playing. had they been subscription they would have bought the game for $50 and that would have been it since they would have had a free month.

If I personally know multiple people that are like this then laws of statistics would argue that there are more out there.

F2P games have come a long way since Maple Story... LOTRO has pulled it off the best out of any game I've seen so far, although I haven't played it in about a year.

Lotr online died the day it went f2p for me and most of my guild.

I hate when games go ftp, what you get is a bunch of cheap people that never intended on playing the game in the first place but will play it now because it's free.
It ruins the lore, when you have a bunch of cheap noobs running around shouting at each other cause it's free.

Now imagine EVERY game is F2P. Many titles will struggle to find an audience big enough to to sustain their future development. I think there is a saturation point with F2P games. F2P is going to be big going forward but it will only be part of the gaming market.
