In current implementation this isn't t really hurting botter's / scammer's it is hurting the experience of the genuine player.
Can't they just ride out the 72 hour's by purchasing more account's to buffer the requirement to have on hand usable account's to do their deeds?
Does it take blizz 72 hours to guarantee a botter account? Verify fraudulently purchased accounts?

IMO adding hard core verification to bank account's / paypal / credit cards / address' if RMAH is enabled to be used.
After all it is a service, it can/does use real money.

If they made those requirements much more strict for digital purchases, this would force scammers / botters that get banned to purchase retail copy's, which im sure blizz would be happy about.

TLDR: loosen play rules, increase RMAH/verification rules.

I don't see the reasoning behind this at all...any botter would just run their bots for 3 days before selling items. Goes for anything...anything against ELUAs, or even laws, would just have to wait three days. What is that going to do? Put them three days behind schedule? I am sure they will cope...

I don't own this game, but my money is on that they want people to actually play through all of their hard work spent making the lower levels and not just go run through a dungeon for a few hours to level up and basically miss the beginning of the game.

3 days with the starter edition, and I don't know about your guys, I generally pass the skeleton king in 3-5 hours or so... What the HELL are you going to do with your product the next 2 days?

I used to feel this way, but it really sucks when you lose one or all of the discs for a program. Take into consideration that you will forever own and possess the license of the digital copy you purchased. Twenty years from now, you won't have to find and dust off the old Nintendo and hope it works. You can just download the game and play it like it was day one.

Clearly directed at organized profiteering. whether it's effective or a good idea, I couldn't tell ya. Either way, it should have been apparent that this sort of thing was gonna happen.

My goodness, is there anything more they could do to spit in the face of their loyal fans.

Every day there is a new article with bad news from them.

They could nerf everything into the ground and only make a couple builds 'viable' when that was their motto with this new skill system...

Or they could add enrage timers (WoW anyone?) to bosses that make them impossible for anyone that decides to use a tanky, lower dps spec...

Or they could punish players by increasing repair costs by 6x so you end up losing gold when farming, encouraging you to head on over to the RMAH and gear up...

Or just end up butchering one of the greatest pc game franchises of all time... lol

If I had to take a guess as to why this is: It's from credit card fraud.

You don't think that these large scale gold farmers / account hackers are buying new copies with their own money do you? They either used hacked accounts, or a lot of these copies are bought using stolen credit card numbers.

So, why are they encouraging people to buy at a retail location? It's a heck of a lot harder to buy physical copies of Diablo 3 with stolen credit card information. You have to have a physical card to swipe at the store, and it looks sort of suspicious if you are trying to pay with a blank card. Not to mention the surveillance camera footage of them committing credit card fraud.

To buy Diablo 3 online, all they need is the stolen credit card information. 72 hours is plenty for them to gold spam / bot / use as a mule account to steal items from compromised accounts. By the time the legitimate owner realizes that their credit card information was stolen, and used to buy Diablo 3, it's too late.
