laptop with dedicated graphics or gaming laptop?

Thread Starter
im in the market for a new laptop. i need for school and work 8-10hrs a day maybe some light gaming D2 & D3(2hr a day max)
Do i need a gaming laptop? or could i get a way with a laptop with a good graphic card?
Im aware that some company's haven't came out with ivy bridge yet so is there a laptop i should wait for?
what im looking for is:
IVB i7
around 1000$ below is better
14-16"1080p screen
gt630M+ or equivalent
3+ hrs of battery
8gb ram
at least 500GB hhd(would put in a SSD anyways and use HHD for external)
I am open to any brands, any help would be greatly appropriated.

I just bought a Sleekbook from HP. Not a high res screen, but it was cheap. It should almost max out Diablo 3, and has like 6+hrs of battery life. I got the 6z version with AMD Trinity. $700 + Free Xbox 360 sweetened the deal for me

Otherwise, look for something with a 640m or higher video card.

Lenovo has the Y480 with a 640m LE for $800 loaded sometimes. The LE version isn't as good as the original variant, but still better than integrated trinity APU.

yea the price of the sleek book and the battery would be sweet but i would be afraid of how hot it would get and how the new trinity processor and graphics would perform...

i looked at the sagers and they seem to me just overkill for the light gaming i would be doing and the bulky build and the lack of battery seems to me they mostly build for serious gaming...

yea the lenovos looked pretty good i looked at a y580 im guessing the newer version of the y570 and bigger than y480 and the specs are pretty good and the price not too bad. i haven't really seen too many people talking about the lenovos looks like 1149 for 1080p 3rdgen i7 gtx660m 1TB hhd... i been looking for reviews but i guess since its so new not many reviews yet...

maybe i should wait a few months it seems everyone is coming out with new designs, and specs seem to be getting cheaper and slimmer builds for portability..

Go for the new DV6t. Outfit it with the 650m, and matte 1080p screen. If you use an education discount, comes out just shy of $1000.

They run very cool, have great battery life, perfect for travel and even some newer games actually. Runs Dota 2 maxed as well as the new Counterstrike, which is mainly what I'm doing.

And the Lenovo with the gtx660m will max out most games, not sure at 1080p though. Top notch build quality, too bulky for me tho. I was just in your shoes, waiting for my sleekbook to ship July 12th.

wow the dell line up definitely seems right up my ally.... the 14z looks pretty good but screen is lacking... and the 15xps looks amazing and definately what im looking for slim, powerful, great battery.... i just cant believe how heavy that thing is... must be good build quality. there's deffinately a lot a great laptops coming out and it seems to get better and better every week with the release of ivy bridge everyone has new designs.... so far the 15xps looks the most promising since i've owned dell in the past and have really liked them. but i can't seem to get student discount with the 15xps?

imma have to stay away from the DV6 on account of the heat issues i've been seeing here
