New build worth it?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, i have hit a bit of a dilemma and I need some help. I have the parts to a new gaming rig all in a cart (Newegg and tigerdirect) and ready to order. Here's my problem. It's pretty spendy ($2500). I have the money saved up for it, and this computer will be for gaming/etc. @ college. My parents think I'm crazy for upgrading from my "current" PC, which i built for $700 2 years ago. The processor itself isn't terrible for gaming (Phenom II X4 955 BE). You can see all the parts in my Sig. However, it's not at all worth dumping money into upgrading this one. I'd have to strip out the mobo (no SLI support) the PSU (too small), the case (only midtower, too small), and the vid card (getting 2 new ones). Why go through all that work when it's essentially building a new one anyways. Plus, if i build a new one, I could leave this one at home and use it to run Minecraft and other game servers through RDP.

However, as pumped as i've been for my grad checks to go through (which they now have, so I do currently have the money to order the parts), the last day or so i've been really thinking, and this is where any of you with recent college experience could have some amazing advice for me. As much as I know this computer will kick-ass and chew bubblegum (but we're all out of bubblegum), the fact of the matter is that it will leave me high and dry in terms of money. I'll still be working this summer (6 more 1-week paychecks) that I could bring the money i get from them to college. But will that be enough? Note, this isn't about paying for actual books or anything, that's all gonna have to be student loans. My parents seem to think i'm gonna need $2000-$3000 for "fun money" and for chipping in gas money to rideshare home every few weekends (only 1.5 hours away). That seems a bit ridiculous to me, especially since i'll have a part time job up there (already got the hook-up). So the way that I see it is this computer is pretty much an investment. It'll be putting money down on something physically tangible that I can use for the next 5 years. I don't smoke/drink or party or anything like that, but I would hate to slowly deplete my money by going shopping for stuff i'll probably never touch. So, all-in-all, do you guys think that for college and for $2500, is the following build worth the upgrade over my old one in my sig?

TL;DR Is the build below worth $2500 to bring to college over the build in my sig?

those are some pretty nice parts for that build. You could easily cut it to $1500 or less without the bling factor and have a grand in your pocket for a bike to ride around campus (or whatever comes up that you might need cash for... like PC games).

no doubt that would be a nice rig, but the extra $1000.00 might serve you better somewhere else.

The most obvious part would be the Level 10 case. What other parts would you advise. I know the SLI may seem like a part to cut out, but personal preference makes me want to keep it, as I know I'll buy it eventually. The other spot is the mobo. That's one spot I could shed $150-$200.

Agree with dutch, you can and maybe even should shave some serious money off that build.

LVL10 for $290 worth it? Can buy some very nice full towers for half of that.
HX750 for $150 is overpriced and overrated, there are better options for less.
8 GB for a gaming rig is all that's needed, but I know, Memory's cheap so whatever you want to do.
Z77 Extreme9 for $350!? What features does it offer that you need? If you don't know, then you don't need.

I see $500 that can easily be shaved off that without losing any performance.

Look if you are just gaming this is all you need. IMO that build you made would not be worth it but this one would be.

if it was me, here is where I could trim 1K easy.

Case - you can find a solid corsair for $100 (save $190)
PSU - you can find a nice corsair or seasonic for $100 (save $50)
RAM - 8 GB is plenty (save $60)
MOBO - you can get a fantastic one for $200 (save $150)
CPU Cooler - there are plenty of options at $40 or less (save $50)
GPU - IF you are going to buy it "eventually" do it when they come down in price, one 670 is more than enough right now (save $490)

that is $990 off without even looking for deals or rebates which I know I could find. when you get to the upper tiers of hardware, spending an additional $490 for extra FPS is just not worth it.

Part of becoming an adult is making responsible financial decisions. you will want this $1000 more in a few years when you are a broke college student or newly graduated.

... something tells me too when you get to college, you will much rather enjoy spending $25.00 to take a nice co-ed out for pizza than you would spending an evening alone with your uber gaming rig.

Stick with a single GPU and downgrade from the premium parts on your list to just good parts. Keep those extra hundred dollars for walking around money.

I've been in your situation before. I blew a lot of extra early semester cash and eventually regretted it especially when I realized my PC was complete overkill. I know the upgrade itch is too strong to ignore so I won't tell you not to do it. PC building can be a crazy strong addiction.

Just as an example in my case there were always posters advertising student ski-trips or whatever that would cost a couple hundred bucks + spending cash. I couldn't make it out to those and missed out on what could've been good times.

Either way, just keep your nose to the grindstone. Once you're out of college and making more disposable income than you've ever had, it'll be time to buy all the toys you want. biggrin.gif

I'll be a little more blunt than other posters. If you're just gaming, a Phenom II x4 is fine. You might crank up the OC a little bit and replace the video card... ok.

But what on earth are you seriously planning to do with the computer? Unless you're dragging a multi-monitor surround gaming configuration to campus you DO NOT NEED SLI. Unless you're planning on streaming SC2 or a few extra frames in Shogun 2:Total War makes that much of a difference to you, you DO NOT NEED a new processor. And that's coming from an Intel guy.

Ditch the 460, throw in a (single!) 670, and call it good. Bam, you're maxing most games on your monitor & running a select few on almost max with no AA. Even that's probably more than I'd spend. Hell, I'd just settle with a 7850 myself. You'd STILL be maxing most games, but you might have to run a few on "very high" settings instead. Boo hoo. But it's far less wasteful than what you were considering. If you're feeling really antsy you can throw in a 128gb Crucial m4 SSD.

If you're still running that Diablotek, you'd probably want to upgrade that too. Here, this replacement is even modular:
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=67324&vpn=HCG%2D520M&manufacture=Antec&promoid=1048

For a gamer, all the fancy things you're thinking about buying are a WASTE unless you also spend ANOTHER $600-1000 on more monitors. Plus you really, REALLY don't want to get to college without walking-around money. Cramps your style with the women who are ready to begin experimenting. Or to put it another way, gaming at max graphics settings + eating ramen for days on end is inferior to gaming at very high graphics settings and eating well, and going to that club meetup, and joining that huge group of foreign exchange students when they take that trip out to Buca di Beppo for a giant Italian feast and then on to the one nightclub that puts on those really awesome drag queen concerts... anyway I got off topic there.

7850 + Crucial m4 SSD + replacement PSU = ~$435.
It'll run games great, seem much better than your current setup, and isn't INSANE.

Edit: Financial aid does not equal pull out your wallet and start setting $100 bills on fire. Don't fool yourself. The money you're spending on books and whatever is NOT free... it's a college loan that you are taking out. You can justify to yourself all you want that you're not buying the computer on credit, you're paying for it up front. But you're lying to yourself. You're taking on debt to build that monstrosity right when your income is about to disappear.

I wish I would have had someone give me this speech after HS graduation. I blew $1500 (in 1997 money) on a Compaq 150 MHz MediaGX processor with 2.1 GB HDD and 10 MB of RAM... and a 33.6 Modem.

I should have bought a cheap car and started scouting girls at college. It took me many years, many dollars, and 3 degrees later to learn the error of my ways. Enjoy your time at college, gaming will be a lowly peripherial focus, not the priority.
