[Giz] Brilliant Spinning Heatsink Cools CPUs 30 Times More Efficiently

The Sandia Cooler was developed by the Sandia National Labs who do enough research to know a thing or two about how to effectively cool a computer. The most interesting aspect of the cooler is that it doesn't attach directly to the CPU using thermal paste—which isn't possible given it's always spinning. Instead, it sits a mere thousandth of an inch above the processor, which creates what's called an air bearing that's actually just as efficient at transmitting heat.

And as the heat moves from the CPU to the cooler, it's almost immediately blasted away via a series of fins spinning at 2,000 rpm. As a result, Sandia claims the system is at least 30 times more efficient at cooling a processor than traditional heatsink and fan methods.

I love the concept...however with all the tinkering I have done in my rig and the countless times I have hit my hand on a fan blade I would be pretty scared to stick my hand in my case in fear that it would shatter my knuckle on impact. tongue.gif

If "30 times more efficient" means "30 times more wattage of heat dissipated", this could herald the end of water cooling.

same, but thank goodness for fan grills. thumb.gif

this Sandia Cooler is quite interesting. would be cool if they created one for the consumer market.

Wow, my tax money going to create something worthwhile for a change. I hope they put some sort of housing over that thing. At 2000rpm, it looks like it could take a finger off. I wonder which CPU cooling company markets it first? I'm going to guess somebody big gets the rights to it like Intel and then they let others make it for them.

Quite interesting, though the video was mostly fluff and catchy buzzwords, as with all hardware, testing is what really counts. Posting test results would have been much more impressive than a sales pitch :\

Nice find, but I call the 30 times more efficient nonsense, I think it might be more efficient then the D14 but since they didn't show any proof, I take this very lightly.
