IS it worth to sell my 6950 DIRT EDITION to buy MSI 5970 - Page 2

Honestly, its a great card, but it comes with a high cost of other parts that you need to really take full advantage, you're better off with your 6950 unlocked and getting a better mobo and CPU. So, not the end of the world.thumb.gif

ive had a 5970 in my machine for a few months now (traded a gtx 460 to a friend, he was fed up with ATI cards) and i honestly can say i despise the card. The thing has so many issues i dont even know where to get started. I have issues with almost every game i play and they seem to get worse and worse as I update my drivers. older drivers dont fix all my issues either. GTA 4 is completely unplayable but if i pop in a GTX 480 i can play it smooth as silk. On top of the horrible performance in some games, this thing sucks up SOOOO much power its not even funny. if you overclock it youll need a new speaker system to hear over the fan as well. i constantly have issues when it comes to watching videos online too, pc loves to just freeze. if i pop the nvidia card back in i can do it for days and never have problem. i could go on and on about the problems but its really pointless with how much stuff ive already complained about.

once i have the dough for a 680 i am forever avoiding ATI cards. it has just caused two many issues for me to enjoy my games, regardless of how powerful the card is. ATI doesnt seem to be very good at putting two GPUs on one board.

anyone have issues like this? not trying to thread jack, if you feel like i am ill gladly make a new thread, i just wanted to be sure you knew about what i had to deal with.

i will be purchasing a new 1000watt power supply next week and maybe I will find out thats causing my issues, but i just dont understand how i can play a game (when they work) for 5 hours and nothing freeze but the minute i pull up youtube it just locks up....

Don't go from HD 6950 2 GB to HD 5970. 1GB VRAM is too less for the latest games. HD 5970 has 2 HD 5870 chips running at 725 Mhz with 1 GB VRAM each. Also you are running the card unlocked as HD 6970 at 960 Mhz. You have a very good card especially for a 1680 x 1050 monitor. I repeat - don't go for HD 5970.

how can you consider my comments biased? ive gone through at least 20 cards since ive started working with computers and never have i had such a powerful card perform so poorly. i shouldnt be able to pop a GTX 480 into my machine and get better framerate in some games. My first few video cards were all ATI, way before AMD even owned them. I use AMD CPUs so im far from biased when it comes to ATI/AMD, i have just had bad experiences with this current card. that is in no way biased whatsoever.

if you can recommend older drivers that might show me what this card can really do then please point them my way...

I had HD 5970, only worked good in two games, that is Metro 2033 and Crysis Warhead. That card is bag of bugs. So many, CFX worked in only handful games..
Also i had lockups in youtobe too, had to flash BIOS of the card.

my experience isnt so biased after all.

i have the exact same issue with youtube stuff. I could play BF3 or JC2 for hours and never have a problem but then 4 youtube videos in the computer would just freeze solid. no bsod or anything, just frozen.

ill look into flashing it tonight. did that help any? ive honestly never been able to get any of the crysis games to run with this card at all, just black screens all day long. i can also rarely use my fallout games. no idea why these would be singled out. with the nvidia card they all worked fine, just not at full settings obviously.

It helped with youtube, but others issues remained, like bugged colors in crysis, about month after flash i sold the card, because i didnt had more strength to fight with the card.

What is more tragically is that i paid about 860USD for that card, and in the end total failure.
