7970 Lightning Brickwall at 1300mhz

Thread Starter
For some reason I can't get the card to budge above 1300 on the core. I can run 1300 with only 1.2v, but I couldn't get 1301 to work even with 1.3v. Could something be wrong with the cards clock chip? I can run 1300@1.2 all day with 80~70*c temps, but try and bump up to 1301 and freeze. Using MSI Afterburner with unofficaloverclocking enabled to get over 1300, could afterburner be the problem?

You are not happy with that 1300Mhz Core clock? Not every chips overclock the same. I would be pretty happy with "only" 1300Mhz. Sometime you hit a wall and no matter how many juice you pump into it, you won't see any gain or see worst results.

What was your expectations with your 7970 overclock?

I'd contact MSI and see if they have a special vBIOS available for your card. I take it you're using AB 2.2.1?

1300Mhz Is a pretty decent overclock on a 7970 (tahiti XT1). What I meant is how many Mhz on the core did he expect?

Maybe he's doing some benching and needs a little help, I don't know.
I don't think him being happy with his overclock has much to do with this. In the very least, it's an extremely interesting situation. It sounds more like a bug than anything else. Doesn't the lightning have multiple BIOSes? If so, have you tried the other?

I think he is curious because it cuts off at such a specific number, 1300. Not 1333 or 1289, but 1300.
Could be that the VRMs can't handle that high of a voltage? I had an EVGA board where bios would read 1.5 [V] but would only yield a real 1.4 [V] limit. MSI AB might be reporting the wrong voltage then. It is interesting that it cuts off at 1300 though.

Probably the heat, gotta get her running cooler & it should go further.
1300 core at 1.2V is very good, it likely wants more volts to get higher, but adding more volts = more heat & can crash it as easily as not using enough voltage.

Well people with reference normal 7970's can sometimes hit 1300, you would expect an extra $150-200 dollar card to do better and have a higher binned chip since it's the lightning afterall.
