Corsair Dominator Hyper Died (a while ago)... Any way to Fix it?

Thread Starter
Long story short, my roommate accidentally knocked one of my 2000C7 sticks off a table. After hitting the floor (about 2 feet below), it stopped working. Thinking it was a simple IC coming lose because of some broken/cracked solder, I stuck it in the oven in an attempt to reflow it (380°F for 8 minutes, if I recall... it was the same temp/time I've used in the past to fix video cards). After that, it still didn't work.

Yesterday I noticed the heatsink was uneven on the stick. This might not be surprising on other stick, but Corsair uses an epoxy to "permanently" mount the heatspreaders to the chips. When I saw this, I was almost certain that at least one of the IC's had almost totally broken off... so I decided to try my hand at removing the heatspreaders. Thanks to the SPi thread over at XS (and Raja@Asus), I found out that with the help of a heatgun/torch, the heatspreaders are actually very easy to get off... and they are. About 1 and a half minutes later, the heatspreaders fell off the stick and it was exposed.

I looked all over the chip to see if any of the surface mount components were visibly damaged or missing.

Everything looks fine... What should I do? I'm thinking of running everything under the heatgun again for a more extended period of time to try to reflow it again. Does anyone have any other, better solutions? Any idea what else could be wrong?

Those are nice sticks but I wouldnt risk the chance of trying to resolder a broken connection somewhere, just too small for me. That may in turn have an effect on your mobo then your out 2 items. What comes to mind for help would be using a multi-meter and running continuity tests to find the broken connection but again I would just make a keychain out of it.

Yup, most likely is some solder points cracked. Use a heatgun and try to reflow....
Once again...

I think I'm going to give it the heatgun later today. Thanks for the affirmation, Ducky.

you might as well try since if you dont theyre pretty useless anyway, so id say you should try reflowing
post #6 of 7
Of course I was referring to an actual soldering gun which may work if you have a good iron like a hako with a very small tip, I use to solder daily. Never heard of a heat gun or oven working, just doesn't seem plausible as it wouldn't heat the solder up enough but if it does do not bump or move it as its reflowing or there's really gonna be a problem.

Supposedly the heatgun has a maximum temperature of 1000°F which should be enough. If that doesn't work, I do have access to a full rework station where I work.
