Architecture student needs help with first build

Thread Starter
Well this is my first build ever and I will be building this for school. Im an Architecture major and I need a good computer for school. I will not be doing any kind of gaming. This will be strickly used for rendering and cad work. The programs I use in order from most to least important are Rhino 4.0, AutoCAD, Photoshop and a few others. Right now Im using a Macbook and at times when Im running these programs at the same times it gets super hot and very slow. So with this build Im wanting something fast that can handle all the programs running at the same time and last me the next 3 years through grad school. I want to keep my budget at $1200 being the max I can spend.

What I really need help is with a mobo and CPU. Either the one I have listed above or the one listed below. I have the chance to get the i7 3930 for $200 and would pair it with the
ASrock x79 Extreme6

Also paired with
Gskills Ripjaw 16gb (4x4)

I have read that this cpu gets pretty hot. I will NOT be overclocking so will the cooler master hyper 212 evo work well enough for this?

My biggest question I have is the 3930k and x79 extreme6 combo too powerfull for the rest of my build? Would I be better off with a different mobo and cpu that I do not have listed?
Please help! Any opinions and help would be very helpful.
This is a tough one. Personally I would go for the 3930K and x79 platform if your budget allows. Rhino and Autocad will probably run the same on both the 2600K and 3930K but if (and when) you decide to try some other programs (like Revit) the 3930K will pull ahead by a bit.

Rhino does work better with a AMD workstation card on the other hand so there is that to consider as well since you say you won't be gaming on it.

Everything else on your build looks good to me though.

Oh and Welcome to OCN! Don't forget to stop by the New members section and introduce yourself.

Thanks for your reply and the welcome! With the 3930k and x79 platform my total is right at $1200 so I can afford that. I just cant decide if that is whats best for me. I have read a couple things where people are saying the 3930k does get pretty hot, but the only thing I can find about it is people overclocking it which I will not be doing. So I guess Im confused as too if it will still get hot on me without me overclocking it.

I'll agree that the cooler will work just fine but unless I'm mistaken the 212 Plus needs an additional adapter for LGA2011 so the 212 EVO might be a better choice. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

If you want the 212 Plus you will need this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103432

Both amount to about the same price (Plus with adapter versus the EVO) with shipping so your pick on those.

Looks good to me. Everything should be compatible. That retail edge price is awesome for the 3930K. Good luck.
