$600 gaming build

Thread Starter
Yes, another one of these! biggrin.gif
My buddy wants to build a decent gaming machine for as close to 600 bucks as you can get. I'm having a tough time choosing between AMD and Intel, as for GPUs, either brand is okay (I was thinking of maybe a 6850). he won't OC, so I'll be fine keeping the stock cooler, and he has a mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Needs a copy of WIn7

I have this in the AMD section, but if you can get a good Intel based rig, please suggest it
I was thinking about basing it off of a Phenom II, as I dont know how the APU would fit in cost wise

Anything you could suggest would be appreciated, I'll reply tomorrow, thanks guys! biggrin.gif

Pentium G850(performs identical to an i3 in games) and grab a 7770 (should be able to find one for $120).

Since you are on a budget, I would recommend getting an AMD CPU. You'll save some cash. I'm just gonna say get a Bulldozer CPU, because its cheaper and is a decent processor. Also, it is the latest from AMD. It will be able to overclock if he decides to overclock in the future.

As for a GPU, I would go with the new 7000 series of cards. The new AMD 7870 is a great card and will be able to play most games at decent settings.

The whole reason I chose AMD is because it's mainly used for people with a budget. If you feel like you can fit in an Intel processor/motherboard, go for it. It will have much better performance.

This is good. I think you can get more performance out of an AMD setup though with such a low budget. I'll make a list as well.

If this is nothing but an el cheapo gaming rig, and you don't care about any other kind of performance, then the i3 or the G850 is the way to go. Get one or the other, and the best video card you can afford, and you're good to go.

You can make a decent AMD gaming system on the cheap with a 960T or an FX-6100 overclocked to the max, or even a Llano with a discrete graphics card for Hybrid Crossfire, but the i3/G850 setup will be cheaper and perform just as well on games. To me, any un-overclockable dual core is a steaming pile of crap at this stage in the game, but since they are Sandy Bridge cores and most games can only use two cores, they are very useful for gaming.

Well, the i3 or Pentium G850 would be the best bang for your buck, If the OP was overclocking and their budget was ~$800, then AMD would be a better option. Since they do not meet these requirements, Intel will be the better choice.
