What about local public radio? That's pretty fair.

Do I get two of these GE cards to water cool or do I go with a really good "regular" 7970 like the Sapphire OC cards? I'm leaning towards the regular cards and sticking with 12.6...

GPU "boost" is disabled when you apply a decent overclock. That is one thing I like about the 7970's is a stable clock and not the silly fluctuations all over the place like the 680's do.

Tiborr from EK has assured me that the 7970 Lightning blocks are coming. He has the prototype on his desk. It usually takes 1-2 weeks to get into the retail channel from that point. I have four 7970 Lightnings arriving tomorrow and if they work good I'll buy four blocks. I don't care about circles or no circles. The Lightnings from what I have read under custom water cooling (since no one has yet made full cover blocks), the guy has hit 1350 MHz no problem. They are low ASIC binned so they don't do well under air but should sing on decent cooling. thumb.gif I fully expect 1350 MHz with four lightnings in quad-fire once water cooled. Your not going to get those speeds with regular water cooled 7970's, GE or not.

Anandtech wasn't so unequivocally positive about it:
Quote:
With that said, AMD has made a great sacrifice to get to this point, and it’s one that’s going to directly impact most users. AMD has had to push the 7970GE harder than ever to catch up to the GTX 680, and as a result the 7970GE’s power consumption and noise levels are significantly higher than the GTX 680’s. It’s unfortunate for AMD that NVIDIA managed to tie AMD’s best gaming performance with a 104-series part, allowing them to reap the benefits of lower power consumption and less noise in the process. Simply put, the 7970GE is unquestionably hotter and uncomfortably louder than the GTX 680 for what amounts to the same performance. If power and noise are not a concern then this is not a problem, but for many buyers they're going to be unhappy with the 7970GE. It’s just too loud.

If I was in the market for an AMD card, I'd rather take the standard 7970 at $430 rather than what essentially amounts to a slight factory overclock for $70 more.

I think the consensus here is that Anand got a bad card. Their results are far worse than the average...

The card was binned for its advertised clocks and if it's not crashing at GE stock factory OC clocks then that particular card is just a poor over clocker. Binned means only to GE specs and no further as we all know. Luck of the draw just like any other card how well it over clocks past that. Just means they didn't get a cherry picked card for the review and between all the reviews gives a general idea worst to better case scenarios anyone else can receive.

I do agree it was not the same experience as the other reviewers. I'm positive once OCN'ers get the card we'll find out how much some can really be pushed. wink.gif Which usually is better than the reviews best case scenarios. smile.gif

More likely, they have a golden 680. The 7970GE is going to perform pretty consistently across similar setups and benchmarks ran with similar settings. The 680 on the other hand can vary pretty wildly.

Maybe Anand have a 680 PE, aka press edition... (joking, don't bite)

I was thinking, maybe power consumption will be a bit different when retail cards appear, obviously these are all pre-production cards. Anand's card overvolted to 1.2v for 1050MHz. Surely, if these are binned as AMD says, they could do that with 1.175v if not less.
My 7970 which I bought a few months ago was factory clocked to 1000MHz & 1.05v. I can assure you (I've measured it) it uses less power than my last card, the 188W TDP 5870.
Also, I've read a review from TPU, where a 1050MHz 1.05v 7970 used less power than a 680.

They appear to have a slightly higher overclock ceiling thanks to the binning and higher voltages. Going forward all the best overclockers will probably be GE cards.

In any case if I was to buy a card this generation the 7970GE would be the one. I think I'll wait for future cards to come out, that way I'll be upgrading closer to the release of next gen consoles and next gen games.
